  • Modern and accessible holiday park on the Solway coast, near the M6
  • A half-hour drive to Carlisle or the Lake District National Park
  • Bistro, bar, well-equipped gym and tuck shop on site; dogs welcome
Coast, countryside and city time are all easily accessible from Bowness on Solway Camping and Glamping… and this Cumbria park is also just a short way from the M6 and the England/Scotland border, making it a handy spot for a stopover on long journeys north or south too. This smart modern complex (part of the Hunter Leisure Group) is within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 20 minutes’ drive from Wigton. The location is an excellent one for days out along this quiet stretch of coast, visits to the city of Carlisle or time spent exploring the northern stretches of the Lake District National Park. Facilities at this park have been particularly well thought out… there’s a well-equipped gym that guests can use for an extra charge, and a bistro and bar where you can undo all the good work you’ve just done. If you don’t need a full meal, steer instead to the tuck shop to pick up ice creams, soft drinks, slushies and alcoholic drinks. Everything has been set up to be accommodating to as wide a range of guests as possible – facilities are accessible for less mobile guests, and those travelling with dogs are welcome (they even sell doggie ice cream in the shop…)

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked: Well, it's just about the only place to stop with a Motorhome in Bowness. The main camping area is pleasant enough, and the nearby pub (The Kings Arms Inn) in the village is good.

Disliked: Avoid asking for a gravel 'pitch' . The gravel area is not much more than a yard, tucked away around the back; not really part of the campsite. Building / development work is in [slow] progress, so some parts resemble a building site. £7.50 for electric hook-up is definitely on the steep side.

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked: Polite and friendly staff, very helpful when approached.
Excellent high quality facilities.
Great value for money.
Excellent on site Bistro.
Superb location.

Disliked: Non patrons parking too close to motorhome pitch, but understandable given limited local parking on the road and ongoing construction.

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked: Fantastic stop over. Very peaceful and quiet on the pitch. Nice views in the morning. The toilets and shower block are all new and spotless. We arrived late on our pitch and all the pubs were closed on Monday night. Michelle who runs the bistro reopened the kitchen especially for us & cooked us a beautifully homemade meal to die for, next morning we had a full breakfast in the bistro which was superb. If you like being spoilt & looked after this is the place to stop over. Homemade food at its best.

Power optional gravel motorhome site

Liked: There is so much to like about Hunters Leisure group, we are frequent visitors because the staff team and the facilities are amazing as well as being in a beautiful village perfect for exploring, dog walking and 2 minutes walk from the sea. Hunters is continuously developing so there is some construction work taking place but this has not interfered with any of our stays at all.
We choose to use the gravel pitch but there are other types of pitches available and the electric hook up is no bother.
The toilets and showers are brilliant, like new, spotlessly clean, and very well kept. They are situated close to the pitches which is really useful. The food in the Garrison bistro on site is so good, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner- we have sampled them all during different stays and have always been very satisfied with the service and the quality of the food is exceptional! We are yet to try Ian and Michelle’s Sunday roast but have been told they are amazing and prepared from fresh…..hopefully next time we stay we will be there for Sunday lunch!
Our dog Otis is always welcomed, in the bar and restaurant and loves the attention!
WiFi is free on site but isn’t the strongest signal depending where you are at the time but didn’t bother us too much at all.
I would advise anyone heading to this stunning area of Cumbria to visit Hunters leisure group, have a look at the little museum, visit the shop for an ice cream, (both on site) and if able to, stay and enjoy what Hunters has to offer. We could see the shepherds huts are very popular, and the resident chickens are great to watch pottering about- especially Adolf the cockerel!

Disliked: There really is not anything to dislike and if you did find something wasn’t to your liking Stella, Ian, Michelle or any of the team would do what they could to help- just need to ask! The information on the website is very accurate and not misleading at all- which we have unfortunately found on other sites close/by which is always disappointing.

Local attractions

If it’s the wilder side of the coast that attracts you, take your binoculars along to see what you can spot at RSPB Campfield Marsh nature reserve (five minutes’ drive). More of a sandy stroll and paddling type? Aim for beaches in Allonby or Silloth (both half an hour), both long sandy beaches with good waves for watersports action. To see some bigger animals, head off for hands-on sessions at Walby Farm Park (half an hour) or get to know gibbons, zebra and snakes at the Lake District Wildlife Park (40 minutes). If history's more your thing, a day out in Carlisle (half an hour) should provide plenty of fodder in the form of the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum. If you’ve not got kids in your party, tours and tastings at The Lakes Distillery (35 minutes) and Annandale Distillery (45 minutes) might be on the cards. Or how about surprising the folk back home by coming back with a little something from Gretna Green (half an hour), that well-known elopement destination?
