  • BeWILDerwood Cheshire 10 minutes’ drive; Chester Zoo half an hour
  • Cycling and hiking direct from the site; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Steve, Alex and the family look forward to welcoming you for a taste of wild camping at Whitegate Farm Camping. Set on a smallholding on the outskirts of the pretty village of Bunbury in Cheshire, this quiet, family- and dog-friendly spot has Peckforton Hills views from the camping field – and Phoebe the friendly llama as your new neighbour. The family-run site is in the Cheshire countryside, 10 minutes' drive from Tarporley, and just a 10-minute walk to the local pub and shop. This is a lovely peaceful spot with lots of privacy, but all the same, it's under half an hour's drive away from many of Chester's popular attractions, including Chester Zoo, The Ice Cream Farm and Wild Shore Delamere. Simple on-site facilities stretch to loos and a shower, and be forewarned that there is no electricity on site; bring torches for any nocturnal wanderings about the place. What you do get, however, are loads of walks and bike rides straight from the campsite, to Beeston Castle (45 minutes on foot) or along The Sandstone Trail (50 minutes). You can take the kids on easy family strolls or cycles alongside the Shropshire Union Canal Main Line towpath (10 minutes’ drive), or have a meander down to the three local pubs within 20 minutes’ walk for a choice of good food and a decent pint or two.

What customers say

Whitegate Farm gets the thumbs up for its friendly owners & peaceful, spotless site with roomy pitches. Beautiful surrounds, handy for pubs/walks, and ace loos. Tiny entry sign & potential queues for the dunny in busy times. Wi-Fi/mobile can be a bit weak. Great for a chill break.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We absolutely loved it here and will defiantly be back! As soon as you arrive you can see how well kept the site is, every aspect of it. The land is beautiful, the shower & toilet area is clean. The shower itself was hot and perfect for camping.
The weather forecast was predicted bad so we were so lucky to have the site to ourselves and even luckier with the forecast being totally wrong. The pitches are great, the dogs absolutely loved it. The owners were lovely, helpful and very welcoming. We only did one night to test out our new tent box, but will defiantly be back. Thanks for having us Alex & family!

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Friendly owner who welcomed us and was super helpful, campsite was clean and tidy. Had nice amenities to be able to make fires and accommodating to bbqs. Very easy to drive to different places but was a calm and relaxed environment. There’s only a small sign when going in so was tricky to find initially as maps tells you it’s the buildings across the road. Once you know where it is it’s super easy to get around the local area

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Very friendly and helpful campsite owner. Alex helped us get our big airbed inflated. We liked the layout of the pitches with areas of long grass separating the pitches and the roadway. Toilet and shower very clean and well serviced. The pub (Panama Hatty's) was only 10 minutes walk and was an excellent venue for food and drink. Beeston Castle nearby was a good place to visit.

Disliked Nothing really. Only one toilet and shower could be an issue if it was really busy or if you are on a longer stay but it wasn't a problem the one night we stayed.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Loved everything about this site. Toilet & shower immaculate and cleaned numerous times a day, washing-up station, fresh drinking water, beautifully kept site, large level pitches, extremely helpful owners. Gorgeous peaceful countryside walks all around and 10 minute walk to nearest pub. Free loan of fire pits an added bonus. Will definitely be returning.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We went to this site with our daughter, son in law and 2 grandchildren, aged 3.5 years and 7 months. We had the site to ourselves and it was fantastic.
Beautiful setting, quite and great amenities. We shall be definitely returning.

Disliked Our only concern would be that if we visited during a busy period there is only one shower and toilet. Hot water to the dish washing area would be a bonus.

A good site with basic facilities a little overpriced.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The site was spacious and well kept. The facilities were clean, and as described in the campsite literature.

Disliked The toilet consisted of a small wooden hut with a flushing toilet in a cubicle and a single electric shower in a cubicle. The lights operated on a timed motion sensor, which shut off while using the toilet or the shower. You need to bring a towel to wave over the cubicle to get the lights on again. Even though the site had few people, it was still necessary to wait for use. More toilets and showers would be a big improvement. There was no heating in the facility and no hot water, only that from the electric shower. Otherwise it was clean, and well presented. There was no dish washing facilities, just a steel table next to the water stand pipe. The water had no drain, so rinsing dishes etc spashed onto the grass. The site, from a facilities perspective, was one step up from wild camping. This would have been no problem if the price was a lot lower. The area was beautiful and peaceful.

Local attractions

Younger kids may not give you any peace until you’ve taken them to The Ice Cream Farm (15 minutes’ drive) to sample more than 40 flavours of homemade ice cream and have a run around at the play area. The elephants, tigers and giraffes at Chester Zoo (half an hour) are likely to be second on the list, or you can go diving with sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes). Take the whole family to test their mettle on the zipwires and treetop rope courses at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (10 minutes’ drive), or make for the inflatable climbing course at Wild Shore Delamere waterpark (20 minutes), where you can also take wakeboarding and paddleboarding lessons. For far-reaching views to the Peckforton Hills, climb up to Beeston Castle (45 minutes’ walk) on its rocky crag. Have an urban day out among the indie shops, Roman walls and Tudor half-timbered buildings of Chester, and if you’re bargain hunting, browse the fashion shops at Designer Outlet Cheshire Oaks (both 35 minutes’ drive).
