  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

Great spot near coastal towns. Staff are a ripper, and the pub serves up top tucker with entertainment. Spacious sites, but the loos and showers are a bit tired. Railway noise sometimes.

Liked Pleasant enough site, we used it as a base to visit family

Disliked Toilet/ shower block could be better, when we arrived the block was very dirty but it was cleaned later that day, could do with some TLC and a lick of paint.
All week it was like they did the minimum cleaning needed but saying that they were usable.
I think there must have been a problem with the electrics on site as there was a big generator running all week. quite noisy.

Liked Hot water in shower.

Disliked Chaos on arrival. Campsite over subscribed - had to share a pitch. No electricity - still issues even though tried to solve with generator. Campsite facilities basic.

Liked We really liked the location and atmosphere. The Inn was lovely, but as advertised, closed on Monday and Tuesdays. Did get to try an Alnwick golden ale! The railway is busy, but we didn't mind. The facilities could use a tidy up.

Disliked Nothing. We really enjoyed it.

Liked Nice big pitch, and nice quiet site even though there were groups of families there. Pitch 20 was protected from the wind which was good, and we had both vehicles, MH & VW camper on the double pitch..
We didn't go in the pub but there was a singer on and Karaoke on Sat night
Amazing dog friendly walks to Felton, Amble & Warkworth, we were only there 2 nights so probably lots more walks around.
The toilets were clean and satisfactory but we think the site was a little overpriced.

Disliked Nothing to dislike really, a good weekend was had.

Liked Nice little quaint quiet site with a lovely onsite pub so not far to walk! Pitches were of lovely size we had a double pitch so was easy to park up together. Ideal spot/base for walking to Felton, Amble and Warkworth - really lovely walks and safe to let dogs off lead no roads etc.

Disliked Thought the price per night was a little expensive for the facilities, though they were adequate we have paid the same price on many other sites when facilities have been immaculate or new.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
