  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

Great spot near coastal towns. Staff are a ripper, and the pub serves up top tucker with entertainment. Spacious sites, but the loos and showers are a bit tired. Railway noise sometimes.

Liked Staff very friendly and the pub food was good.

Disliked Toilets and showers were disgustingly dirty and tatty. So much so that we couldn't find a shower clean enough to use. I would rate this site as being worth £20 for use of a pitch, not £35 for a pitch and use of showers and toilets. The site was crammed with campers so you would think they could afford a cleaner to maintain the showers and toilets.

Liked Staff friendly at check in

Disliked Everything else! Write up said spacious pitches .. we were crammed into a space with 2 other MHs and none of us has room to wind out our awnings. Noisy until late due to people sitting outside and music (despite rules saying no noise after 10.30). Shower/toilet block..simply awful. Booked for 2 nights, left after 1st !

Liked Nothing.

Disliked 1) Probably OK if you were in the campervan/caravan side to the right as you enter the site which has spacious, defined pitches. We were in an area to the left as you enter with undefined pitches and tents and campervans crammed in like sardines.
2) Whilst the temporary generator was understandable and unavoidable, the noise was awful which made it an expensive and unpleasant stop over.
3) Toilet shower block was very dilapidated. We have stayed at cheaper sites with much better facilities.
4) Skip for rubbish absolutely stank and full of flies.

Liked Pitch sizes to the right of pub are good size.(looked extremely crowded to the left). The girl who showed us to our pitch was very friendly, but didn’t know where the chemical toilet disposal was located, or the fresh water.

Disliked It felt very much like the pitches were part of the pub car park. The rubbish facilities were meagre, filthy and smelly. The shower and toilet block were old, dirty and not up to a decent standard. The floors were constantly wet as there were no mops left out for people to clean up after their showers. There was toilet paper in the toilets, also in the toilet locks , on the floor and in the sinks. There was still a generator being used on site for electricity, so quite loud( although after a while you got used to the noise). The site is within 20 feet (ish) of main train line, so lots of trains back and forward. With some investment and thought/planning, this site could be reasonable.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
