  • Small adults-only motorhome site in Kielder Forest Park
  • Kielder Castle under a mile away; observatory 10 minutes' drive
  • Serviced hardstanding pitches in the UK's largest dark sky park
There's some really excellent hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching to be done in the Northumberland National Park – but if there's one thing this park is really known for, it's surely the fantastic stargazing. A whopping 572 square miles here have been given Gold Tier status for their incredible dark skies, making this the largest International Dark Sky Park in the UK (and the second largest in Europe). If you're travelling in a motorhome, you’ll be able to take full advantage of these fabulous surroundings at Clear Sky Lodge Park, an adults-only touring site on the edge of Ravenshill Forest and with views over the North Tyne Valley. That setting means the views here are gorgeous by day – but they're potentially even better by night, when the starry displays start up. If you're keen to learn more about what you’re seeing, head to nearby Kielder Observatory (10 minutes' drive) for one of their regular events. And this great location also means you'll have plenty to do by day as well, exploring the trails of surrounding Kielder Forest Park, visiting Kielder Castle and heading down to Kielder Water. You might also like to throw in a day trip to the Roman attractions around Hexham (50 minutes' drive away). Preserving the dark-sky status of this park means that facilities here have necessarily been kept to a minimum, but guests have access to toilets, showers and a chemical disposal point. Pitches all have water and electric connections, and they’re on hardstanding that should be accessible in all weathers.

Liked: Lovely views out, really small number of pitches so felt private. The facilities lodge was great. Cosy and warm and best campsite showers ever!

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: We had a great stay at Clear Sky. The site is lovely, well kept, toilet/shower/washing up block is perfect, underfloor heating is fantastic and the showers are super hot. The location for walks, cycling and pure peace and tranquility is perfect.

Disliked: The only thing that let this site down is the owners disregard for their dogs behaviour and fouling. I understand that it is their land, however when one of the site's policies on Pitch-Up is to have dogs on a lead (and I believe it's just a given to pick up your dogs poo), I expect that the owners follow their own rules?!

One of the mornings I was coming out of the shower block and one of the owners dogs growled at me (small black and tan dog). It was off the lead, the growl was completely unprovoked as I was just walking by and the female who was nearby at the time called it towards her but didn't put it on a lead. Both me and my husband had seen this dog running free on the site throughout our stay and wondered who it belonged to.

The following night two of their dogs fouled on our pitch (see attached pictures). All of which were off the lead, unsupervised. The only saving grace was that one of the owners other dogs ate the poo that it's brother had just left 🤮

I like to think I'm a very tolerant and understanding dog owner - I love all dogs and think the owners dogs are beautiful, however, we wouldn't return based on the points stated.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review of our site pleased to hear that you found the site of a high standard but you had a problem with our dogs.
It’s such a shame to hear you won’t be returning
I would like for you to know that the well being of all of our animals (dogs, sheep, pigs, ferrets ,chickens, guineafoul, Harris hawks) is my own personal priority
Please note that dogs must be kept on a lead on site as we had 5 sheep attacked by dogs from the campsite that had to be put down.
Our dogs are all retired working dogs that have always worked around livestock and other animals and are not a threat to people, dogs or livestock.
If Jackie or myself are working outside on site the dogs maybe with us but certainly not left to roam.
When dogs are barking on the campsite our dogs want to investigate.
If the small dog growled why did you not speak to the owner who you say was with the dog.
The picture you posted of our dog fouling
was on the grass that was not part of the campsite or of your pitch your pitch is all hard standing.
It is a shame that you could not have come and spoken with us as I do not understand how a dog going to the toilet once can spoil your stay.
We try extremely hard to make sure everyone enjoys our site including dogs.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Small site, cleanliness of the toilets and showers. Great access on doorstep for lots of walking and exploring area. Shower pressure excellent and plenty of space to shower and swing your towel. Pitch sizes good. Liked that you could just turn up on the day, pick pitch that was available and set up. Given a contact number if any issues.

Disliked: Nothing at all I disliked.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Fantastic view, great for walking and exploring the area. Toilet Shower facilities very good and clean.

Disliked: Owners dogs running free around site and across our pitch which meant our dog was on edge. One had a shit on the grass next to our pitch and cocked his leg on the wood marking the pitches.

From the manager: Thanks Jeff for leaving a review and good to hear you found the site to be of a high standard.
I am sorry to learn that our dogs came on to the touring site and upset you.
Our dogs are all working dogs or retired dogs that are well socialised and used to being around other dogs and people that are of no threat to you or your dog.
Our dogs are not left to roam the site but when taken out for a walk may run around to the touring site to investigate barking dogs.
I am sorry that you as a dog owner find this offensive because we try very hard to give our dogs a good life as well as giving our guests the best experience of our holiday park that is also our family home.

Liked: Small quiet site , no Wi-Fi unless you’re close to the Wi-Fi spot in the red phone box . No TV / radio reception. Easy access to keilder castle and the facilities available.

There is a log cabin which has kitchen , laundry facilities , toilets and showers and they were spotless .

Communication was good pre arrival re directions etc and we had no need to contact the owners while there.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Such a gem of a site, great views across the forest. Amenities were in a lovely purpose built cabin, showers were enormous, more of a wet room, with plenty of hot water. Washing up facilities even included cloths and a variety of cleaning implements which were all kept spotlessly clean. Also housed a washing machine and tumble dryer.
Short walk down the lane brought you out at the castle and the pub. There is also a cycle hire place there too. From there, there is any number of walks/cycle routes of varying lengths and difficulty. The salmon centre is worth a visit too.
Small shop in the village had essentials but be aware it’s open seasonally.

Disliked: Having to leave.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Good clear instructions provided to find site.
Well maintained spacious pitches.
Immaculately clean & in keeping with forest vibe, toilet and large shower area with washing up facilities.
Washing machine available at additional cost if needed.
Good service to the pitch with the water with how remote the area is. Some quiet sites seem to only offer the electric and this means we would certainly consider to use this site for a night on longer journeys / breaks too.
Found it reasonable price as the electric was included, I just hope people don’t abuse this and as a result it changes it for everyone else.
We only stayed two nights this time, and would have stayed an extra night if circumstances had allowed, we enjoyed it that much.
Although the refuse area says recycling area on the gate, it is commercial waste and all gets taken away together so it doesn’t matter which bin you use, so don’t spend time sorting your waste, it all goes in any one bin.
Jackie came around to check everything was ok, which it certainly was.
It is a lovely walk just up the lane towards the castle where we saw tree creepers and nuthatches amongst the other wildlife.
Lots of lovely walking /cycling / wildlife opportunities locally and the lady at Tower Knowe Tourist Information Centre at Keilder Water was also extremely obliging and helpful.
Can certainly recommend.

Local attractions

Given how close it is, your first visit should be to Kielder Castle, just under a mile away. It's got a variety of exhibits about the area’s history and wildlife, a lovely café and a bird hide where you can look out for the resident ospreys. Bikes can be hired here, or you can head out on a scenic drive along the toll road. There are plenty of options nearby for walks, of course – and one of the best is the Lakeside Way, an accessible multi-user trail that runs all the way along the 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water (10 minutes’ drive). Look out for native red squirrels as you go – Kielder is home to about half of the country's population – or head to the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes) to see other local wildlife. If you're into mountain biking, you may like to cross the Scottish border to 7 Stanes - Newcastleton (25 minutes); if it’s history that’s more your thing, try heading to Hadrian's Wall to explore places like the Temple of Mithras (45 minutes) and Housesteads Roman Fort (50 minutes).
