  • Small adults-only motorhome site in Kielder Forest Park
  • Kielder Castle under a mile away; observatory 10 minutes' drive
  • Serviced hardstanding pitches in the UK's largest dark sky park
There's some really excellent hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching to be done in the Northumberland National Park – but if there's one thing this park is really known for, it's surely the fantastic stargazing. A whopping 572 square miles here have been given Gold Tier status for their incredible dark skies, making this the largest International Dark Sky Park in the UK (and the second largest in Europe). If you're travelling in a motorhome, you’ll be able to take full advantage of these fabulous surroundings at Clear Sky Lodge Park, an adults-only touring site on the edge of Ravenshill Forest and with views over the North Tyne Valley. That setting means the views here are gorgeous by day – but they're potentially even better by night, when the starry displays start up. If you're keen to learn more about what you’re seeing, head to nearby Kielder Observatory (10 minutes' drive) for one of their regular events. And this great location also means you'll have plenty to do by day as well, exploring the trails of surrounding Kielder Forest Park, visiting Kielder Castle and heading down to Kielder Water. You might also like to throw in a day trip to the Roman attractions around Hexham (50 minutes' drive away). Preserving the dark-sky status of this park means that facilities here have necessarily been kept to a minimum, but guests have access to toilets, showers and a chemical disposal point. Pitches all have water and electric connections, and they’re on hardstanding that should be accessible in all weathers.

Liked: The site was well situated and pitches were set up lovely and had ample space. Toilet/shower block was also lovely.

Disliked: Unfortunately a couple of things let down the stay for me personally, I was phoning home stood next to where you could get WiFi when a gentleman pulled up alongside me interrupted my phonecall and without an introduction asked if I was in the campervan, I said yes to which he said ‘the price is only for 2 adults’ I had asked ‘oh really?’ as I was convinced we’d booked it for 4 adults, to which he pulled a face and in a very sarcastic tone responded ‘yes’. Put on the spot and not wanting to annoy anyone or get kicked off the site I’d offered to pay more, to which he said ‘speak to Jackie’ and drove off with no other instructions. Luckily managed to find the house where Jackie lived and spoke to her who was absolutely lovely, showed her our booking which did in fact state 4 adults and she apologised and was honestly so lovely so it certainly doesn’t reflect her at all. I’m not entirely sure who the gentleman was but unfortunately he came across with a very poor attitude.

Unfortunately the toilets had run out of toilet roll Saturday evening at about 6 and still hadn’t been replenished when we left Sunday morning, had I not been blind sided on the Saturday I probably would of rang or knocked on the house to let them know but didn’t feel comfortable doing so after the little incident which had happened. Also made me question whether the toilets had been cleaned at all considering the toilet roll hadn’t been replenished following a sold out site on the friday night.

From the manager: Hi Emma I am pleased to hear that your mixed party of 4 people around the age of 30 found the site spacious with a good quality shower block.
I am sorry that you felt aggrieved that I asked a member of your party at the phone box in a diplomatic manner if your group had booked for four people.
The reason for this as stated in the terms and conditions stated with pitch up as:
Occupancy
Bookings must not consist of more than 2different households.
Group bookings of 2 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.
No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
You had a motor home with a huge tent which completely filled the large pitch having to park a second vehicle
in the driveway of the site.
At the time I was late for picking up one of the site guests from the train station and asked your friend to speak with the owner at the main house regarding pitch up terms.
I am also sorry to hear you found the shower block not having toilet roll. I think you must not have seen there is a spare toilet roll on each windowsill of the toilets in case the dispenser runs out.
The shower block is checked at least twice a day and cleaned thoroughly every day as previous review will testify.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: The quietness of the site, only a small site but perfect for someone who wanted to get away from the new year's Eve hustle and bustle around people! Facilities really clean and well looked after.

Disliked: Small concern regarding WiFi as I had no signal whatsoever so if an emergency arose it could possibly cause an issue. But that's a minor thing. Absolutely nothing wrong with the site.

From the manager: Hi Sean thank you for staying with us and I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

We do not advertise WiFi but it is available at and around the phone box on site.
Certain phone networks have recently extended coverage which includes our site.

Happy New Year and hope to see you again.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: The site was in a beautiful location, just what we needed to get off grid for Christmas. I had some stunning walks in the woods down to the castle. The toilet block was amazing, the rainfall showers were great & all was great quality. Utility area was well stocked (& I could get wifi from the phone box in there without getting cold) Really enjoyed our stay, I would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Only gripe was that the two campers on either side had plumbed into the water taps on either side of us so we had to carry a heavy water tub to fill up (Wed taken the trolley out the van thinking the plot was fully serviced)

From the manager: Thank you for staying with us and I am pleased that you enjoyed your time at our site.

Sorry to hear about your water issue as we do advertise fully serviced pitches and normally we have splitter taps coming off the main tap which gives every pitch an individual waster supply but due to the freezing weather we have removed them as they are not insulated and tend to freeze very quickly causing the tap to freeze leaving no water at all.
Hope to see you again.

Quiet, safe, secluded, large pitches.

Great reception for tv and wifi from our pitch.

Disliked: Not necessarily a dislike but a tip for those needing wifi, get in the first pitch by the shower block 😜

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Clear Sky Caravan Park is a gem nestled in Kielder Forest. The owner is exceptionally kind and helpful—when we got lost towing our caravan near the site, he personally came to guide us in his car, which was a lifesaver.

The site itself is incredibly peaceful, with minimal light pollution, making it perfect for stargazing. Its secluded location ensures you are surrounded by the lovely outdoors. There are plenty of scenic walks nearby.

The facilities are great. Washing machines and tumble dryers are available at a small cost. The toilets and showers are lovely and clean. Showers are individual and you don’t have to keep pressing the button for water!!!

Highly recommended!

Disliked: Not a major dislike, but a good tip for future travellers - Make sure you take food, drink & essentials as the closest shop we could find was in Bellingham, 30 mins drive away.

Local attractions

Given how close it is, your first visit should be to Kielder Castle, just under a mile away. It's got a variety of exhibits about the area’s history and wildlife, a lovely café and a bird hide where you can look out for the resident ospreys. Bikes can be hired here, or you can head out on a scenic drive along the toll road. There are plenty of options nearby for walks, of course – and one of the best is the Lakeside Way, an accessible multi-user trail that runs all the way along the 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water (10 minutes’ drive). Look out for native red squirrels as you go – Kielder is home to about half of the country's population – or head to the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes) to see other local wildlife. If you're into mountain biking, you may like to cross the Scottish border to 7 Stanes - Newcastleton (25 minutes); if it’s history that’s more your thing, try heading to Hadrian's Wall to explore places like the Temple of Mithras (45 minutes) and Housesteads Roman Fort (50 minutes).
