  • Peaceful pop-up campsite on the North Yorkshire heritage coast
  • Direct access to The Cleveland Way and Skinningrove beach on foot
  • Just outside the village of Brotton, 10 minutes’ walk from pubs
Campers can get to the beach on foot from Gripps Farm, but that’s not the only place your legs can take you from the camping field. The pop-campsite also has direct access to the 109-mile Cleveland Way and, if you find the former activities that thirsty work, it’s also within a 10-minute walk of pubs and shops in the village of Brotton. Convenience is quite a common theme at this campsite on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, five minutes’ drive away from Saltburn-by-the-Sea. However, it’s not just that: the site is also peaceful and scenic, being surrounded by lush green countryside. There are animals such as donkeys, cows and sheep to be seen from the footpaths around the site, and the handy on-site amenities include portable toilets and running water. Skinningrove beach, accessible from Gripps Farm on foot, will surely be at the very top of your to-do list here. The large, sandy bay is dog-friendly all year round, which should be good news for those of you who plan to bring your dogs camping. Golfers, meanwhile, can cart their stuff to the golf course, a three-minute drive away. Food and drink are, of course, other important considerations when camping. Here, the location is also very handy, as it’s just outside the village of Brotton, where there are shops, pubs and a chemist within 10 minutes’ walk. Loftus, a five-minute drive away, has bars, pubs and restaurants, and just a little further along the same road, Easington (10 minutes’ drive) has yet another pub along with a farm shop with a café. Supermarkets are handily set in Skelton-in-Cleveland, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

There are a very generous number of things to do in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (five minutes’ drive), a coastal town that has been popular with holiday-goers since Victorian times. Stop by the beach if you’re determined to try some watersports or head directly to some of its historic attractions, like Saltburn Pier (open since 1869), the Saltburn Cliff Tramway (open since 1884) and the Saltburn Miniature Railway (open since 1947). Those who don’t mind a slightly longer drive, just as long as the returns are great, can eye up Whitby (35 minutes). Famed for its Captain Cook heritage and Dracula inspiration over at Whitby Abbey (35 minutes), there’s also plenty to do here. Climb the 199 steps up to St Mary's Church if you’re feeling full of energy, and if you’re not, there’s always the option to retreat to the beach. Gripps Farm is just above the North York Moors National Park (10 minutes from the northern edge) too, so walkers will have plenty of areas to take their pick from. One of the closest sites is Danby Beacon (20 minutes), thought to have been used during the Roman occupation.
