Spacious pitches

  • Pop-up campsite overlooking Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire
  • Ripon 10 minutes’ drive, Brimham Rocks 15 and Harrogate 20 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; playground and family pub five minutes’ drive
When you’re after the simple life in spectacular North Yorkshire surroundings, Abbey Falls Campsite comes up trumps. This no-frills pop-up campsite for tents and tourers is set right on the edge of gorgeous Nidderdale National Landscape countryside, and if that’s not quite enough, the pitches all overlook the fairytale ruins of Fountains Abbey, a gem of a place destroyed by King Henry VIII in 1539. As this is pretty much wild camping (albeit wild camping with gorgeous views), facilities are limited to male and female toilets, cold showers and a washing-up area – there is no hot water and no electricity on the site. There are dairy cows grazing in adjacent fields, a choice of walks along the River Skell directly from the pitches and a family-friendly pub in the village of Sawley (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a kids’ park with a playing field. The historic city of Ripon (10 minutes) offers up an impressive cathedral, a brace of museums and lots of pubs and restaurants; elegant Harrogate (20 minutes) is also a popular dining and shopping hub.

What customers say

A top-notch, quiet spot near Fountains Abbey. Guests rave about the super clean, basic but functional facilities and the friendly, helpful owners. Spacious pitches offer privacy and room to roam. While a few found it a bit steep for basic amenities lacking hot water, most reckon it's great value and highly recommend it.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Location, view, lots of space.

Disliked It was a bit tricky to figure out exactly where it was on the map. Would be good if you could get Google maps to add a marker for the entrance.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Great spot, you can walk to Fountains Abbey from the site. Very basic amenities, one toilet and cold shower for male and female and drinking water. However this was all we needed. They allow BBQ's which was great and fire pits.

Disliked Only thing, I think £25 for a none electric grass pitch is a bit steep.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Lovely quiet site with plenty of space
Some nice places to walk nearby. Dog friendly. Relaxed atmosphere. Clean. Friendly owner, firepits available to hire. Everyone was quiet by 10pm

Disliked No toilet rolls or hand towels by 9pm. Price if camping alone is a bit steep, but good value for a family. No hot water, but already aware of this when booking and didn't bother me. Grass could do with a cut, but not awful.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Easy to find. Clean toilets (did not use shower but looked clean too). Soap in toilets. Bricks & fire pits available. Wasn’t too fancy just a field, toilet, running cold water, sink & bins what more do you need! Owner & his mother paid us a visit to check we were okay daily which is nice - friendly to chat to.

Disliked Nothing - wouldn’t mind paying extra for warm water in the showers but really happy with everything as it was
