  • Well-maintained site in scenic Yorkshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from local village; 35 to Scarborough; 45 to York
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of the North York Moors; playground on site
‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but breaks at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at this site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton. This is camping at its most peaceful. Not only is the site in scenic countryside, but it is also has a children's playground and lots of open green space. Low noise rules apply between 10.30pm and 8am to make sure that staying here is a pleasant experience for all. Dog parents can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (although no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in. If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

What customers say

A top spot! Clean, tidy, with brilliant facilities & great owners. Ideal for exploring nearby towns. Peaceful vibes, lots of space, kids' play area's a hit. A few more loos needed at busy times, and water taste sometimes questioned. Most keen to come back!

Liked The campsite is in a great location. Close to Thornton Le Dale and Pickering
Because we have a 3 year old we liked the park and our little boy spent a lot of time making friends and playing on this.

Disliked Where do I start! 😬
The water is cloudy and smells of egg...even when you shower the water leaves a slimy residue on you and it really smells. We spent our time using bottled water for everything!
The toilets are in metal containers and in sheds...very dirty, often no toilet roll. Only 3 showers for the whole site and they are unisex, definitely need more.
The chemical disposal was the worst we had ever seen...often overflowing and absolutely disgusting.
Bins were always overflowing
There is no reception or any point of contact to raise these issues with.
Only one washing up station...our neighbour queues 45 minutes one night to wash his pots!

Liked Near to fields and the beautiful Thornton Le Dale

Disliked Where to start! The water had a weird egg smell to it and left a slimy feel on your skin. There was no explanation for this and nobody onsite to ask, there was a man there but as he spoke no English we were unable to communicate with him. We could not drink the water as we were fairly certain it was not safe but there were no signs to offer an explanation for the weird smell or slimey feel. We were there for 6 nights and saw nothing of the owners whatsoever. The pictures of the toilets are deceiving they were ok at best, with bent doors which were left with small gaps around the edge. We obviously won’t be returning.

Liked Nice big pitches and great to have water as well as why on each pitch.

Disliked Could do with a few signs to locate grey waste and Elson point. Too many kids running across pitches and climbing over the fence into the camping area.

Liked Nice area, nice pitch

Disliked Water had an odd smell, already explained in previous reviews, too many people and not enough loos and showers in peak season/summer holidays, bit of a free for all in tent area and large groups of people taking a lot of space.

Local attractions

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon. There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection of showman’s engines. For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of your break touring stately homes: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site. As there are no kids to take care of, you can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes' drive) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes) – and picking up a tipple for later – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.
