  • Adults-only site with a fishing lake outside Hillington, in Norfolk
  • Sandringham Estate five minutes’ drive; Blakeney Point 45 minutes
  • On-site bar open on weekends; heated shower blocks; dogs welcome
Have fishing rod, will travel. If your dream holiday involves sitting on the banks of a peaceful lake while casting a line, Gatton Waters Caravan Park might well be the place for you. Sitting a five-minute drive from the Norfolk village of Hillington, this adults-only site spreading over 24 acres has its own coarse-fishing lake, stocked with carp, roach, rudd, perch, bream and tench. It also has a fully-stocked bar open on weekends. While you indulge your favourite activity, the rest of your family (and the dog, who is a welcome guest here) might prefer to explore the surrounding woodlands, which is inhabited by hares and other wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, the lake itself attracts plenty of winged creatures; however, if you’re into birdwatching, you should take the half-hour drive to Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve, an area of salt marshes and sand dunes populated by terns, plovers and wintering geese. Some might prefer a day at the seaside, maybe at sandy Brancaster Beach (25 minutes) or Holkham Beach (40 minutes), or at Blakeney Point (45 minutes), which is known for its seal colony. Want to catch a spectacular Norfolk sunset? Head to Snettisham Beach (20 minutes), then get back to the site for an evening barbecue (stopping for provisions in Hillington, which has a fully stocked convenience store and a petrol station). Not in the mood for cooking? There are plenty of pubs serving locally sourced food and ales in the nearby villages. Amenities at the caravan park include ladies’ and gents’ heated shower and toilet blocks, and a washing-up area, as well as electric hook-up, chemical disposal, wifi and charging and recycling facilities.

What customers say

Top spot! Chill adult-only campsite by a fishing lake. Reviews rave about spotless, modern amenities, top blokes running it, and roomy sites (some with lake views). Well-kept, heaps of wildlife. Metered electric, you pay what you use. Great for seeing the sights.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked The scenery

Disliked The toilet / shower block, showers turn off during use leaving hair with shampoo in.

The electric being hard to work, followed instructions upon leaving but told we hadn’t, and we were not the only people.

Reception staff moaning that we checked out late, but we paid for late checkout.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked Really nice and spacious site, we had a pitch close to amenities with a view over the lake. Helpful and pleasant staff, facilities were kept clean and we had no problems with the WiFi during our stay. Altogether it made for a very relaxing stay.

Liked Quite

Disliked The amount of ducks and Geese at least 60-80 when trying to fish they keep getting caught in the line and diving for bait if you went for a walk you would have to be careful to avoid the geese droppings

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked Fabulous site! All pitches sited around a central lake (fishing spots available) - large pitches - toilet/shower blocks were spotless - dog exercise field - small clubhouse open in the evening - books and games available to borrow. Secure site, adults only - if you are looking for a clean, well maintained, peaceful and friendly site, you'll not want to miss the chance of staying here! Mark was a great host, always around keeping the site maintained; he even very kindly delivered our Amazon delivery to our awning! Dark sky gave us great view of the Perseids! Thoroughly recommend Gatton Waters.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked Beautiful peaceful and well maintained site. Large pitches, most overlooking the lake and the others facing open countryside. We had fabulous weather and enjoyed just relaxing and watching the few anglers reel in some impressive catches. Lovely walk over to Castle Rising where we had lunch in the Black Horse pub. A very enjoyable few days!

Disliked Not a dislike, but the showers in the brick shower block were unpredictable pressure wise. Washing my hair was difficult but it wasn't a deal breaker in the whole scheme of things!

Local attractions

Does your canine companion deserve a royal treat? Take them to Sandringham Estate (five minutes’ drive), where they can sniff their way around 243 hectares of dog-friendly parkland. Humans can also stroll or cycle along nature trails winding through oak and chestnut groves, then reward themselves with an elegant afternoon tea (book in advance). At Norfolk Lavender (15 minutes), you can feast your eyes (and nose) on fields upon fields of colourful and fragrant flowers. Informative tours explain the process of harvesting and distilling lavender oil, and you will also learn all about the various uses of this aromatic plant. Stretching along the River Great Ouse, the historic town of King’s Lynn (15 minutes) is justifiably proud of its maritime heritage, which you can explore on guided or self-guided tours that take you along narrow cobbled streets to the medieval harbour and quayside.
