  • Peaceful, off-grid Cambridgeshire campsite on the outskirts of Soham
  • Ben’s Yard 10 minutes’ drive; Ely 15 minutes and Cambridge 50 minutes
  • Pitches surrounded by farmland and walks in wildflower meadows
Hitting the sweet spot for quiet Cambridgeshire countryside breaks, the spacious camping field at Sherwood Farm provides peace by the bucketload, but equally well is only 15 minutes’ drive from Ely and 50 minutes from Cambridge if you should feel like some more urban action. Owned by the same family for over 70 years, this property on the edge of the fenland town of Soham has been a chicken farm and a smallholding growing cut flowers and hay, before beginning a new life in 2021 as a nearly wild campsite. The farm’s eight acres are surrounded by tall hedgerows, providing a peaceful rural haven brimming with wildlife and abundant in seasonal blackberries, sloes and rose hips. You can also explore the stunning wildflower meadows, which have paths mown around their perimeters to create gorgeous walking routes. Please note that this is a back-to-basic campsite with no electricity, so bring torches and a supply of batteries from home. However, firepits are provided for barbecues, and there is a sheltered communal area with a washing-up sink plus a unisex toilet and shower block.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to discover the Cambridgeshire fens on foot or by bike, there are bags of quiet routes to follow through the open landscapes. The National Trust-owned Wicken Fen Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive) is a great starting point for visitors, with boat cruises along waterways surrounded by reed beds, bird hides for spotting wildfowl and a traditional fenland cottage decked out in 1930s style. With an all-year programme of events, Newmarket (20 minutes) is the UK home of horse racing, while the historic city of Ely (15 minutes) beckons with its impressive cathedral, history museums and boat trips along the River Great Ouse. There’s more culture to soak up at the ruined Benedictine abbey in Bury St Edmunds (35 minutes), and of course, the university city of Cambridge (50 minutes) has ornate colleges like Kings and Trinity to explore, as well as the famed Fitzwilliam Museum and enticing modern art at Kettle’s Yard gallery. If you’re travelling with kids, they can get up close to goats, alpacas and cuddly donkeys on tractor rides round South Angle Farm Park; another family-friendly option is Ben’s Yard (both 10 minutes); park your offspring in the adventure playground while you browse for locally made honey and chocolates in the artisan shops.
