Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Lovely spot in the bush beside a lake. Reviews rave about its quiet vibe & ease of access to California Country Park's cafe & playground. Spacious, flat sites. Staff are a ripper! Showers are warm & clean, though a bit old-fashioned for some. Minor Wi-Fi & upkeep gripes.

Liked Pitch was a good size

Disliked Site seemed a bit neglected in parts, it was clear there was some development going on but 1st impressions wasn't good. It was clear that the site had long term residents there so felt a bit like was invading their site. Toilet and shower facilities could do with some TLC as they felt tired and grubby, same used nappy on the floor in toilets for over 24 hours. Signs were stuck on doors with some sort of caution tape which looked scruffy. Toilet disposal area was disgusting and grid covered in dirty toilet paper. Shower went of about evey 15 seconds and there was no where to put your clothes without them getting wet. Site has lots of potential if managed properly and some basic maintenance and care was taken.

Liked Lovely site. Toilets where always clean.

Disliked We weren't sure where our pitch started and stop due to some trees being on either side of where our pitch was meant to be and our tent wouldn't fit between them. Also we were sure on where we could get drinking water from as it was not on the map.

Liked The site was very clean and relaxed. Staff were friendly and it was brilliant being able to short walk into the country park. Showers were hot (sometime a little too hot!)

Disliked - Onsite Shop was very limited /small but there is supermarkets about a 10mins drive away.
- No ‘on-site’ activities for the kids to do (but about a minute walk around the lake to the country park play park)
- no WiFi and poor phone/internet signal onsite

Liked Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked Cramped tent spaces. Never seen so cramped anywhere else in 20 years of camping. Just don't book.
Though this is on lake, the lake view is restricted to cabins on the lake hence it being on lake ( pond ratger) has no advantage whatsoever.

As you enter the park from the main road, the entrance to the Chalet and Touring Park is located along the drive on your right-hand side. Drive to the main gate and look for a pedestrian gate to the left of the main gate. Please check in at the office for collection of all fobs, maps, brochures and keys.

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive. On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away. For a bit of culture and history, it will take half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
