Take long-distance hikes along the spectacular Cowiche Canyon (10 minutes by bike) and Snow Mountain Ranch trails (five minutes) for mountain views, or head up to Oak Creek Wildlife Area (20 minutes) to see if you can spot elk or California bighorn sheep among the stands of pine, spruce and fir trees. Learn about the history of local Native Americans at Yakima Valley Museum (20 minutes), which also displays an intriguing mix of regional wildlife dioramas, historic carriages and elegant period costumes. If it’s time for a little light refreshment after that cultural interlude, first stop might be the Cowiche Creek Brewing Company (five minutes) to taste craft beers along with burgers, fries and occasional live music. If you’re keen to sample more local fare, head for Treveri Cellars (half an hour) to sample their sparkling rosé and white wines, or try the Cabernet Franc reds at Freehand Cellars (35 minutes). And if you’d like to stockpile some seasonal fruits for your onwards journey, there are numerous kerbside fruit stands within 20 minutes’ ride.
