Positiv: This is a very lovely campsite in a stunning location! I stayed in Sparrow Pod with my dog. The little seating area in front of the pod has a spectacular view across the woods to the sea, perfect for enjoying a campfire and all the birdlife. This is the 'simple' pod (bring your camp bed and everything you'd need in a tent) - it's beautiful quality wood and has several sockets and cosy underfloor heating.

The site as a whole has lots of lovely touches (including fresh daffodils in vases in the toilets!) and spotlessly clean facilities - the owners are really welcoming and helpful. I noticed that there are nice level pitches on various 'terraces' for tent campers and a hardstanding area for campervans.

Some helpful practical things:

Dog owners - dogs must be kept on lead on site but there's a wonderful large field immediately adjacent where dogs can run free. This leads to the walk through the woods to the beach which is traffic free (see note below about steep drops).

Access track - this is a fun challenge and I wouldn't fancy it in wintry conditions or a low slung sports car! But it's totally do-able if you're patient - take it very slowly in a low gear and note where the very few passing places are as you might need to reverse quite a long way. I did it six times and never encountered another vehicle though. It's totally worth it for the wonderful location at the other end - just take all your provisions as you probably won't want to 'pop back' to the shops.

Mobility/fitness - if like me you're a bit compromised in these areas, it's worth noting that the site is sloping and you can't park right by your pitch/accommodation. But wheelbarrows are available for transporting gear and I'm sure you could ask for one of the nearer tent pitches if that would help you. The path to the beach goes through stunning scenery (took me about half an hour at quite a slow pace) with steep parts and uneven ground - sturdy footwear advised. There's also a very simple stile (see photo) which is the only way into the woods - I couldn't climb it but luckily I'm just tall enough (5 foot 8) to 'stride' over it inelegantly!

Safety on the walk to the beach - as you get further through the woods, nearer to the impressive viaduct which you go underneath, there are some very steep drops - just good to be aware of if you've got dogs or young children running around. I just popped my dog on her lead for those sections.

These are just some useful pointers to help you enjoy your stay - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this beautiful place and will definitely be back one day!

Next to so signal so it's perfect for that "off grid" feeling and the campfire is always welcome.

Positiv: Beautiful quiet site with lovely views.
Caravan was well equipped but gave us a sense of privacy. Our boys enjoyed making a fire outside. We would love to return with our tents one time.

We didn't go to the local beach due to time constraints but would love to come back and see that next time!
The caravan was clean and well equipped - it was also nice and toasty with the heaters too! The shower was great - better than most caravan showers. Nice and warm and good pressure.

On Sat we visited Beamish which has been on our lists for a long time... it's great! And not too far away. On Sunday we went up to seaham which was a real hidden gem!

Negativ: Luckily we're used to bumpy one track roads as one of our party is Irish and one visits remote Scotland frequently... it didn't cause us any problems but if you're a nervous driver prepare yourself hehe
