Or, failing that, swimming within view of it – an undeniably less daunting experience for those who aren't the strongest of swimmers. At this Veneto site you can do just that in a top-notch outdoor pool, with the additional option of hiring a bike and setting out around the lake's perimeter or simply clinking glasses of vino and watching the sun set over all that shimmering water…
Campeggio del Garda, a gorgeously green park on the edge of that self-same lake, is quite the place to spend northern Italian hols. Active peeps can get a sweat on at the outdoor sports pitches, while kids and teens can be left to battle it out in the games room or amuse themselves in the playground. The high-season entertainment on offer here is pretty sure to bring the whole clan together: nothing says 'family hols' quite like big beats and bigger dance moves from mum or dad.
The park also has a dog-walking area, a bar that serves snacks at various times throughout the day, a food shop and a laundry room. Other restaurants and small food shops are easily accessible in Peschiera del Garda's village centre, a 10-minute walk away.

No doubt it’ll take a certain amount of effort to drag yourselves away from that view and that pool, but the plethora of attractions nearby means it’s very much worth doing (and it’ll all still be there when you get back…)
Start by pottering around Peschiera del Garda – it’ll take you 10-15 minutes or so to wander up to the centre to take in the Porta Verona, Palazzina Storica and historic prison, or hail a boat taxi for a tour of the lake. If you’d rather stick to the land side, take a drive to Sirmione (25 minutes away, at the end of the peninsula you can see from the site) to explore the 13th-century Scaligero Castle and the ruins of the Grottoes of Catullus.
For more on the history and gorgeous buildings front it’s got to be a day out in Verona (half an hour away by car or the direct train from Peschiera del Garda). Should the kids tire of such things, it’s handy to note that a trio of top family attractions – Gardaland theme park, Movieland and the Sea Life Aquarium – are within a 10-minute drive.
