Equine enthusiasts, rejoice. For what could be more heavenly horsey better than cantering through lovely old forest in the gorgeous landscape of France's Drôme department, saddling up with ease via an equestrian centre a few minutes' stroll from your pretty and peaceful base? (Perhaps being able to extend your equine adventure for several weeks hence, but no need to think of homely responsibilities just yet.)
If you care not for gallivanting via galloping, set out on foot or by bike from Camping Les Truffières instead, as its quiet setting on three hectares of centenarian oak forest means you can set out adventuring straight from the site, possibly around the colourful swaths of the surrounding lavender fields or to investigate the many events and festivals around the local villages in summer…? The medieval village of Grignan, with its splendid 12th-century castle, is about 10 minutes by bike or 25 by foot.
Back at base, kids should be utterly enthused with the well-equipped site playground, set handsomely among the trees so that grownups can have a scenic setting too while supervising play. Kids and their owners have an outdoor ping pong table to knock balls around at too, and a nicely-sized pool for cooling off in after the family champion has been declared: again, there's lots of scenic room alongside both for peaceful times afterwards.
Although barbecues are allowed and supplies are easily sorted in Grignan, set aside significant time for the Camping Les Truffières restaurant, to work your way through each evening's gourmet special followed by ice cream and accompanied by cold drinks of your boozy or non-boozy choice. Takeaway pizza, breakfast, bread and pastry orders, and a fried mussel night every Friday are all available too.
Camping Les Truffières has spacious grass pitches, some looking directly onto the neighbouring lavender fields and some shaded among the woodland. The site has toilets and showers, a launderette and a parent and baby washroom.

Canter off into the Drôme countryside from the equestrian centre 300 metres from the site, or start out on a hike or bike ride through the local woodlands and around the lavender fields.
However you get there, one early destination on your list should be the local town of Grignan a couple of kilometres away, to see its spectacular 12th-century fortress edged by a vast lavender field. To pick up local produce for eats back at base, Grignan's market day is every Thursday.
The area around Camping Les Truffières hosts cultural events aplenty during the summer, from jazz concerts to celebrations of local artists, wine and food festivals and dance evenings: just ask staff at the park for pointers if you're keen to investigate further.
And if it's French wine you're keen to investigate further, take to the car to find a tour around the vineyards and wine cellars of Buis-les-Baronnies and Sainte-Jalle, both around 50 minutes' drive away.
