Villatent at Camping Les Bois du Bardelet

Here’s a lovely Loiret location to take a look at – especially if you’re in the market for water-based views and activities. Villatent at Camping Les Bois du Bardelet, 10 minutes’ drive from Poilly-lez-Gien, is on the edge of a lake for fishing, canoeing and simply settling at the lake beach for a spot of waterside sunbathing. The lake’s not the only place to go for aquatic times though: this site also has two outdoor pools (with sun loungers and umbrellas for long, lazy days) and an indoor pool to make sure swims can continue in the cooler months. Also by the indoor pool are a hot tub and a heated water play area to keep the kids happy. Time to dry off for a bit? Get set for a game of tennis, spend some time at the wellness area or find a pal to play pétanque with. In summer, there’s even more on the menu, with kids’ activities (for ages 4-6 and 7-12) including crafts, games and pony rides. Evening entertainment might include shows on the bar terrace or dancing at the weekly mini disco hosted by the site’s mascot. And what of where you’ll stay? That’s also been well thought-out, as accommodation here is in spacious fully equipped safari tents with beds, a private bathroom, a lounge area and a kitchen. If you’re in the mood to cook, pick up supplies at the site’s small shop; if not, tables await (perhaps on the terrace if it’s a fine day?) at the restaurant.

Say ‘Loire Valley’ to someone and you’re likely to conjure up images of vineyards and châteaux – and it’s no surprise to find that both are in strong supply around here. On the wine front, you may choose to walk or bike locally for gorgeous views across green vineyards, or set forth for Sancerre (50 minutes’ drive) to get to the heart of one of the world’s top grape-producing regions. Château-seekers, meanwhile, should plan for a few days out – starting with the Castle-Museum in Gien (10 minutes) and then moving on to the turreted Château de Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire (15 minutes) and the excellent medieval Château de Sully-sur-Loire (half an hour), surrounded by a moat and pretty parkland. While you’re in Sully-sur-Loire, put your canoeing skills to good use for a paddle down the river; if you’d like your river trip to be a bit easier on the arms there are sailing boats to hire in Gien. If the kids fancy seeing the scenery from on high instead, take them to Nature Adventure (50 minutes) for the treetop trails.
