Can you see yourself bedding down by the beach, with a cracking collection of restaurants, bars and shops within a few minutes’ stroll? You can? Then canter along to Camping Candango, a couple of minutes’ strut from cracking Canasvieiras beach, one of Santa Catarina's liveliest spots. Up at the north end of the island, you'll be about half an hour’s drive away from the main town of Florianópolis but well supplied with places to eat, drink and acquire new beach kit. If you’d like to save a few reais by eating in, the facilities here should see you sorted: the site has been set up with a generous three kitchen areas, giving access to stoves, fridges, sinks and barbecues, along with benches and tables on which to lay out your feast (or just crack open a sociable few beers with amigos old or new). There’s often quite a party going on around Canasvieiras, but don’t panic if you fancy an early night – peaceful slumbers are always on the cards at Candango, thanks to the nightly quiet hours (11pm to 7am) and the patrolling security team that’ll have a word in the ear of any noisy folk who try to bend the rules.

Bring on the beach times… the gorgeous two-kilometre sandy stretch at Canasvieiras is likely to tempt you out for many an hour loafing on its loungers and playing about in the calm waters. But that’s not all the beach life the island has on its menu. Far from it, in fact – there are more than 40 sandy stretches to pick from around the shoreline. Try Barra da Lagoa (half an hour) if you’re catching your first few waves as a surfer, or head to Praia Mole (35 minutes) or Joaquina (45 minutes) if you’re a bit handier with the board. Want something a bit quieter? Set off on the hour-long journey to the far end of the island to seek out secluded Lagoinha do Leste. It’s worth straying from the shore for a bit to wander around the island’s interior – within half an hour’s drive there are some fab trails to hike along from Florianópolis and around the huge Lagoa da Conceição. Towards the southern end of the lake there are spots for sand yachting and kitesurfing, along with plenty of places to chill out and take a dip in the lake (should you fancy a change from all that seawater).
