Ever fancied escaping to your own private island? Somewhere that you (and up to 19 of your closest friends) can have a bit of an adventure without any neighbours other than the occasional passing dolphin?
It probably sounds like the stuff of dreams (or perhaps lottery wins…) but it’s actually a real-life possibility at Island Retreat Florida, which welcomes just one group at a time to stay at its primitive campsite. And you don’t even need to do a whole lot of intrepid travelling to get there, as it’s right there in Tampa Bay, a fairly short boat trip/kayak paddle away from the shoreline. You’ll be able to rent boats, kayaks or canoes if you don’t have your own to bring along.
This little island was completely overgrown when the current owner bought it a few years back, and although it’s now been developed slightly for guests the vibe here is still very much wild camping. Firepits, primitive toilets and raised tent structures are provided, but otherwise you’ll need to bring everything you need, including drinking water, bug spray, torches and toilet paper (plus bags for disposal).
It’s really all about getting back to nature here, and you’ll need to have one eye on your surroundings at all times, whether that’s looking out for weather and tides or making sure you’ve got suitable water shoes to avoid stepping on stingrays and sharp oyster shells along the shoreline.
If you do fancy returning to civilisation for a little while, it’s a relatively easy paddle back across the water to a great riverside bar and grill (and proper toilets…)

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.- A charge of US$100.00 (£77.16) applies for the use of the shower.
- Guests under the age of 5 are not allowed on site.
- No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
- Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
- At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.
- Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
- There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
- There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Local attractions
You'll likely spend most of your time here just hanging out and exploring your own island, but if you'd like to see more of Tampa Bay, take your canoes/kayaks out for a paddle to the likes of Fantasy Island, Bird Island or Beer Can Island. Alternatively, just head back to shore for a meal at River's Edge Bar and Grill or maybe a game at Showmen’s Disc Golf Course.
Looking a little further afield, you may like to explore the wider Tampa area, adding things like Busch Gardens (half an hour’s drive), ZooTampa at Lowry Park (25 minutes) and Croc Encounters (25 minutes).
For beach days, look to places like Apollo Beach (15 minutes), Davis Island (25 minutes) or Bahia Beach (25 minutes).
