Basque Country campsite Camping Zumaia is in a mighty fine location: it has splendid views over the surrounding protected forests, and among the cliffs, clear seas, golden sands and old fishing ports of the Basque Coast Geopark on the Gipuzkoa coast. More? It's close to the Urola Ibaia river and also only a few minutes' drive from the traditional octopus fishing town of Zumaia and its marina, sports centre, two glistening beaches and clutch of seafood restaurants. Family-friendly Camping Zumaia has swish modern facilities including a swimming pool and paddling pool (open in high season), a play area and an indoor playroom to keep the kids happy in all weathers. The bar-restaurant serves up local fave dishes out on its open terrace, or will happily pack things up for you to take away. If you'd rather go with a DIY dinner, pick up supplies at the well-stocked shop and cart them off to the communal barbecue and picnic area. Other facilities on site include bathroom blocks adapted for customers with reduced mobility and with free hot showers, a wifi connection, a washing-up area and a laundry area with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Liked: A quiet and peaceful campsite with excellent and clean facilities. The little store is well stocked with essentials - including warm, freshly baked goodies every morning. The restaurant is outstanding, with some of the best food we had in our trip. The outdoor playground was a big hit with our kids. Oh and the WiFi was super fast!

Disliked: Nothing I can think of.

Liked: A very friendly welcome. All the staff were welcoming. Excellent restaurant with plenty of choice. The showers and all facilities were clean. It was shame it was the end of the season and it was closing which meant we could not stay there on our return.

Liked: Sehr gepflegte Anlage. Die Sanitäranlagen sehr sauber. Die Lage oberhalb eines Industriegebietes, aber davon bekommt man kaum was mit und die Aussicht ist schön.

Disliked: Das Restaurant ist leider in der Winterzeit nur am Wochenende geöffnet. Dieses wird aber nirgendwo vermerkt.

Liked: Excellent campsite! Very friendly staff. Ablutions and pitches very neat and tidy. Plenty hot water. Don’t worry about the industrial area comments - yes you drive through it but there is a lovely river walk into town. I used this several times including at night. Train to San Sebastián is 40min and €5.50.

Liked: Toilets kept clean hot showers.

Disliked: The chemical toilet not in the best place at the top of the site instead of near the main toilet block. Pitches not level.

Local attractions

Get the camera ready and get out to explore the Basque Coast Geopark, a protected wildlife and conservation area on a slice of coast between the Bay of Biscay and the Basque mountains. The area is most famed for its geology, particularly the flysch formations etched into the park's 13 kilometres of cliffs: hike along said cliffs or take a boat trip from Zumaia to see the flysch at their best and snap fab pics. The Basque Coast Geopark town of Zumaia, a few minutes' drive away, has two sandy beaches (one, Itzurun, is a top place to forage for fossils), an Old Town with a marina, two museums, plenty of bars and restaurants, and the Gothic church of San Pedro with temple and reredos. The steam locomotives of the Azpeitia Railway Museum (up in the hills, 20 minutes' drive away) are another top local pick, or you could delve back much further in history with a look at the Magdalenian cave art of Ekainberri Cave (15 minutes). Folks with their finger on the fashion pulse may like to take a trip to see the finery on display in Getaria's Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum (15 minutes).

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 2 day(s) of arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

Pitches

Some facilities require the wearing of swim caps.
Swimsuits are obligatory and swimming shorts or Bermuda shorts are not permitted.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Reception

Reception is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. between 27/06 and 04/09.

Safety

Barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground and attended by an adult at all times.
