Big, modern, family-friendly, on the edge of a river and close to the Atlantic coast (and Portugal): there's a lot to like about Camping Santa Tecla in the Galician province of Pontevedra. This is one of the biggest sites in the region on the edge of the Minho river, Galicia's longest, in a protected natural area with many an opp for wildlife watching, and a short drive from the hiking and cycling of elevated and scenic Mount Santa Tecla. The modern facilities on site include a large outdoor pool, a sports court and a playground, and amenities of up-to-date toilet and shower blocks with free hot water, along with a laundry room and washing-up areas. Several spacious shaded areas are on site to duck into from the summer heat. If you want to investigate the traditional local gastronomy – course you do, you're in Galicia – the Santa Tecla restaurant specialises in the same, all ready to be washed down by good tasty wine.

Liked: When we first arrived, we wanted to turn around and go back out. The campsite was deserted of people but was a sizeable shanty town of vacant (primarily old) caravans. We decided to stay, as we had booked three nights, and are pleased we did. We had a massive choice of pitches, and that worked for us. The toilets and showers were spotless but were limited to 46 people at a time, but that was not a concern as I didn't see anybody! The location was excellent for restaurants, but they are about a forty-five-minute walk, the best are in the harbour ; the mountain we visited was amazing (you get there from the town), and the food at the top was good. So to conclude, we had a perfect time, had some great food, and the heritage and beaches made it worthwhile. You look out onto Portugal, so that makes it pleasant.

Disliked: It was like entering a closed-down theme park, but once you got o er that we liked it.

Liked: Location, close to the sea and looking over towards Portugal. The showers, loos etc in a large well lit light clean building with modern sanitary fittings and plentiful hot water. There is a reasonably well stocked shop where fresh croissants were available.

Disliked: We were there in terrible weather which didn’t help. The restaurant is only open at weekends in late September. The site is around 1km from any cafes, restaurants or shops. It is a big site with lots of long term caravans on site. The individual pitches aren’t huge but the site wasn’t at all crowded when we visited.

Liked: This is a large and busy site. The showers and toilets were plentiful and kept clean. There was also a car wash area which was very popular. Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout our stay giving us recommendations of things to do. There is a good pool which became busy at times. There is a lovely cycle/ walk to the next town.

Disliked: Some of the pitches had no shade.

Liked: I arrived in mid September with a smiling Ms “Assumption” at the front desk to greet me and teach me all things Santa Tecla. She gave me the pick of the place and made sure her colleague was there when I landed to hook up power. Then he did something unique - He actually stayed until I confirmed my unit did indeed have power then he vanished into the night. The restrooms/showers/laundry/dish area and pool are all ample in supply and well maintained by the friendliest of staff. I have stayed in nicer parks (more expensive) before, but Camping Santa Tecla was good for my soul!

Disliked: I would like the option to leave earlier than 0800 but no big deal.

Local attractions

Fishing, kayaking, mountain hiking, cycling, snorkelling and swimming are all easy to get into around Camping Santa Tecla – but no-one would judge if you just chose to lie and bask under the hot sun instead... The site is within easy reach of the fishing city of Bayona as well as Galicia's biggest settlement Vigo; from both, explorers can catch a ferry to the spectacular Cíes Islands, a nature reserve and marine park of splendid scenery, beaut beaches and winged inhabitants such as birds of prey, pelicans and the world's biggest colony of seagulls. Even closer and on the other side of the river is Portugal, where highly suggested options include the municipalities of Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira and the town of Valença, and, a bit further afield, Viana do Castelo, Braga and Portugal's second biggest city Porto. (Yep, the first biggest is of course lovely Lisbon.) Another most popular option in the area is hiking and wandering in the mountainous Monte Aloia Natural Park; if you thrived on the scenery of the Cíes Islands, you'll find this place pretty fab too.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

General

Bookings are nominative and non-transferable.
In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Quiet hours must be respected between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.

Pool

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.
