  • Dog-friendly mountain climbing site 15 minutes’ drive from Gandia
  • A 15-minute drive from the beach, with cycling or hiking trails nearby
  • 300-metre via ferrata on site, plus a pool and an adventure park
Climbers, hikers and eat-all-day-ers, gather around. Camping La Escalada Gandia is a mountain site with its very own via ferrata and climbing area, an outdoor swimming pool and an adventure park. It’s based in the mountains of Marxuquera and has a splendid set of eco credentials, including wooden houses, spring water and a solar magnifying glass energy system. This Valencia site is 15 minutes’ drive from Gandia, where there are sandy beaches, an old town and heaps of Mediterranean specialities and tasty traditional sweets to try (think shellfish from the Gandia fish market, rice, La Delicà pastries, peanut nougat and pumpkin fritters…). Pastries, fish and sweets sorted, active sorts can get straight to climbing activities – the area is well known for its good-quality rock, and the site also has its own 300-metre-long via ferrata suitable for both experts and beginners. There’s also an adventure park (for kids and grownups alike), which has a circuit with more than 27 features like zipwires, suspension bridges and Tibetan bridges. If you’re looking for somewhere to put your feet up after all of that good stuff, there’s an outdoor swimming pool on site with a chill-out area and backing on to the restaurant terrace. A sandy alternative is Platja de Gandia, a seven-kilometre stretch of fine Mediterranean white sand 15 minutes’ drive away. If you're not done with activity yet, you can get stuck into watersports like rowing, surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, canoeing, aqua biking or sport fishing here.

Electric gravel and earth pitch (large, shaded)

Liked: Wow! What a beautifully situated site place situated in a remote spot in the hills above Gandia and surrounded by orange groves. We arrived in spring when the smell of the blossoms was everywhere. We immediately wanted to stay more than the one day we had scheduled so we will have to come back. Pitches are very big and under fox glove trees. The facilities are private and clean with great showers . We had a great evening walk in the local hills and enjoyed a lovely meal in the excellent restaurant. Before we set off we had a long peaceful walk in the orange groves. The site is popular for hiking and climbing. Great if you have kids.

Electric gravel and earth pitch (large, shaded)

Liked: Arrived in desperate rain which fortunately eased overnight woke up with an amazing vista which immediately dealt with my normal morning ritual.

Disliked: On leaving had an unfortunate and unforgettably unpleasant encounter with a local resident who blocked the road and insisted that I reverse round a blind corner which was not necessary as she could have reversed easily (maybe…!) herself. My advice is to avoid this place for this reason.

Electric gravel and earth pitch (medium)

Liked: Schöner Terassencampingplatz mit allem was man braucht inkl.

Electric gravel and earth pitch (large, shaded)

Liked: Nice rural site. Nice and clean.

Disliked: Pitches are up a steep slope. Our motorhome is 8.5 metres long and was grinding out on the terraced hill. They give you 2 single pitches which are separated by the poplar tree right in the middle of them. We had to use the neighbouring empty pitch in order to park. Wouldn’t recommend a motorhome any bigger than 6 metres on most of their pitches. The tree also prevented us from putting our awning out.

Local attractions

Get acquainted with the gorgeous Gandia… catch a concert or an exhibition at the Casa de Cultura Marqués de González de Quirós (15 minutes’ drive) – known as Casa de la Marquesa by locals. It has a lovely garden and café too. Teatre Serrano (15 minutes) runs more art performances: opera, jazz, comedy, you name it. The town's also the place for a taste of the nightlife, which ranges from discos and pubs to beach bars and dance halls. Alternatively, you might want to be fresh for the morning’s hikes or bike rides… There are cycling trail routes through the mountains to peaks across La Safor. Gandia has a five-kilometre promenade, peaceful routes around La Marjal park and urban routes past historic sites like Parque Arqueológico del Castillo de Bairén (20 minutes). The marshes of the Carrer del Senill i Borró (20 minutes) between the beach and city make for more gorgeous pedals.
