Shade under the trees

  • Scenic site with direct access to a sandy Costa Dorada beach
  • In a protected natural area in the town of Torredembarra
  • Bar-restaurant with terrace, supermarket, car wash and playground
Care for a spectacularly scenic Costa Dorada campsite? With direct access to a fine sandy beach – on a protected five-kilometre stretch of Catalan coast made up of marshes, dunes and freshwater lagoons? Come to Camping Clarà, a quiet site in the Tarragona town of Torredembarra. The beach here is Els Muntanyans, right in the middle of the Costa Dorada, one of four beaches in the town and a place of special significance for its landscape and wildlife (speaking of wildlife, this may be the appropriate time to inform you that nudism is allowed here too…). The quiet vibe of Clarà makes it a smashing pick if you care for blessed peace on hols, but you'll still have access to a full range of facilities including a bar-restaurant with terrace as well as pizzeria and takeaway, plus a well-stocked supermarket and a car wash service. A playground, games room and table tennis are around for kids and teens.

Liked: Excellent location and the most child firendly camping we've seen so far. The clients were mostly German-Dutch and some Spanish and some French. There were entertainers for the kids almost the whole day round. Thay had a dedicated tent and the park. There they played, painted, etc...They even have a separate bathroom for kids were everrything is conveniently resized for them.

The beach just at the exit of the camp is also very nice. Not overcrowded (sincce no apartments or cities near, only 4 campsites), very natural and not so hot as Valencia-Alicante. The sand is also very light and doesnt feel hot as in other beaches as it's made of small pieces of broken and rounded shells. The water was ultra-clean.

The tent sites are very big. Ours was 5mx10m and I think all were more or less the same size. There were trees everywhere to provide some shadow. We can't speak about the restaurant as we didn't try it.

Disliked: Someone could say that the man playing Pink Floyd in his van 22:00 to 24:00 was a bad move, but man the volume was reasonable and even my wife liked it and learned something about those anthems of rock.

Local attractions

Wander the beaches and coastline around Camping Clarà for days of wildlife watching among its lagoons and dunes and the protected ecosystem of Els Muntanyans, and then get into town for heaps of historic stuff: the Old Town, harbour, castle and handsome cobbled streets of Torredembarra are all rightly worth a look. Also anciently and also a firm must is the old Roman city of Tarragona, the province capital famed for its wine and nosh as well as its fab old ruins; Salou, La Pineda and Cambrils are all within easy reach for more town days guzzling one's way around old Catalonian sites. Another top option in the area is the Pau Casals Museum, the former summer house of famed Catalan cellist Pau Casals, while if you're up for a more adrenalised adventure, theme and water parks like Aquopolis, Aqualeon and PortAventura are an easy drive away.
