The site

  • Dog-friendly wooded valley two kilometres from Villasur de Herreros
  • Half an hour's drive from the spectacular UNESCO city of Burgos
  • Restaurant serving Castile and Leon cuisine; bar with spacious terrace
Demand a stay here as soon as humanly poss. For the Spanish site of Camping Puerta de la Demanda is in a tiptop spot, half an hour's drive from the fab old city of Burgos, and a couple of kilometres from the spectacular views of the Uzquiza reservoir. It's also (yes, this is a tiptop spot), within easy reach of the Arlanzón river, for long lazy days of boating on its calm waters, and 20 minutes from the UNESCO-listed Atapuerca Archeological Site, the biggest archaeological site in the world. (If you're hunting history of any kind, this region is the place to be, as Castile and Leon has more medieval castles than anywhere else in Europe.) The dog-friendly site is in a valley of oak, beech and pine trees, a couple of kilometres from the municipality of Villasur de Herreros and two and a half hours south of Santander. It's a top spot for digging into Castile and Leon culture too, as the restaurant dishes up a fine selection of traditional regional cuisine, and the bar with spacious terrace is the place for sipping a Spanish beer and drinking in the countryside views. A mini market stocked with daily essentials is also on site, along with good general amenities including a launderette and washing-up area, free hot showers, toilets and disabled facilities.

Liked: Really easy to find.
The lovely gentleman showed around and made us feel really at home.
Excellent laundry facilities with drying room good for us as it rained
Restaurant was inexpensive with good food and service.
Nice cycle rides around the nearby lake.
Lovely flat grassy pitch
Easy to get to Burgos town by car not so easy without transport.
Really quiet and peaceful.
Pool wasn’t open as it was October but seemed nice.

Disliked: Nothing really, although there is no dressing space within the shower cubicle and no flexible shower which is better for ladies and children.

Local attractions

One early stop should be the Atapuerca Archeological Site, one of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Castile and Leon. Covering almost 300 hectares, its caves make up one of the earliest records of humans on the planet, from nearly a million years ago. Group tours to Atapuerca leave from the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos: check times before leaving as tours aren't regular. As well as arranging your archaelogical trip, you must surely also sort a day to sightsee in Burgos, the medieval city that's the historic capital of Castile. Its UNESCO site is the spectacular Cathedral of Burgos, started in the 13th century; other sights include the Museum of Burgos and the Fadrique de Basilea Book Museum, as well as the plenty of pretty parks along the banks of the Arlanzón. Camping Puerta de la Demanda is also within easy reach of the local via verde for biking and hiking, and close to several other trails and paths: ask the team for info and tips.
