  • Mountain setting near a national park
  • In the province of Jaén near Albánchez de Mágina
  • Café, bar and two large pools
There's a comely little village near the mountain site of Camping El Cantonet, set in the Andalucian massif of the Sierra Mágina and in the province of Jaén. It's Albánchez de Mágina, home of an ancient Moorish fortress along with handsome white Andalucian buildings and traditional festivals and carnivals in the summer months – and then there are the Iberian and Roman remains, or just loafing around the scenic town plaza… Away from town, El Cantonet is a quiet site, surrounded by the mountains and with several hiking, cycling and horse riding routes nearby. It has two pools, one for adults and one for kids, as well as a playground, a games/common room with TV, and a café and bar serving local cuisine and drinks. Amenities include a laundry area, sinks, and two loo and shower blocks (ladies' and gents'), both with disabled access and hot running water.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked: The price, peace and quiet, clean facilities and plenty of hot water. Amazing views - yes you can't see them directly from your pitch but just walk around and it's all there.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked: Private spacious pitch. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Beautiful spot in the mountains. View should have been stunning but high tree hedges planted all around so could not see anything.

Pools cordoned off and appeared dirty.

Asked for information about trails for walking and cycling and very pleasant lad working there could not help as said he was not local. No leaflets or anything available.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked: The pizza was excellent!

Disliked: The site promised exceptional views. But that wasn’t possible because of the 10 ft high hedges.
The very large vicious dog that tried to get through the fence at our two small dogs. Who barks continuously day and night
The noise of people shouting and vacuuming at 11pm.
While eating our pizza the site owners son and others play football around you eating.
The sharp thorns that were big enough to go through soles of shoes.
And there were thousands of them.
The womens toilets were grime broken showers and toilets

Electric optional gravel and sand touring caravan pitch

Liked: It’s small with wonderful views

Disliked: This is a campsite that could be absolutely wonderful but it’s not!! It’s dirty, run down, had to clean the pool before swimming! Facilities were limited to non existent what was there was dirty. Couldn’t bring ourselves to use the showers. Had to ask 5 times for someone to come and unlock the electric box. Struggling to say much good. Couldn’t get away early enough!

From the manager: Buenos días, lamentamos la impresión negativa que usted se ha llevado de nuestras instalaciones. con respecto a la piscina todos los clientes dicen que esta perfecta y 2 días antes paso una inspección y lo dio todo ok, con respecto a lo de la caja eléctrica, solo llamo 2 veces y el resultado fue que usted lo estaba conectando en el enchufe que no le pertenecía por eso no funcionaba, y por que no pudo usar las duchas? y por que no dice que le cobramos menos por error? y no dijo nada.

Local attractions

Most of the Sierra Mágina mountain range is in the Sierra Mágina Natural Park near Camping El Cantonet, a place of varied terrain including steep slopes for mountain biking and hiking, caving opps among the limestone and dolomite rocks, and Jaén's highest peak Pico Pandera at 1,722 metres. If you're spending some time in the national park (recommended), it's a fine plan to see how many of its towns and villages you can get to – Torres, Jimena, Bélmez de la Moraleda, Jodar and the heritage gardens of Pegalajar are all here – and try out the local dishes of the tapas bars and taverns while you're there (if you want a local foodie souvenir, pick up a few bottles of Sierra Mágina olive oil). The city of Jaén is 45km away: lashings of more golden olive oil can be found here (Jaén is nicknamed the olive oil capital of the world), and there are several festivals held in the city alongside its cafés, museums, castle and cathedral.
