Base yourself here with some haste if you like Spanish holidays with a difference, closeness to coast, nearness to nature parks and mountains to trek any day you pick. This site is in a scenic setting to scrutinise a lot of what's on offer in arid Almeria, the most easterly region of Andalucia. The Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Park, Andalucia's biggest coastal protected area and with a full-on desert climate (yes, there be palms), is about an hour's drive away; closer to home at 10 minutes' drive are the glittery white beaches of Mojácar – all 17 kilometres of them – and the mountain range of the Sierra Cabrera are accessible 20 minutes' drive away. At base, Camping Sopalmo has pitches surrounded by carob trees, palms and shrubby gypsophilas, alongside showers and toilets, free wifi, a playground, a washing-up area and a laundry room. There's also a bar with a large terrace, and if you're here in December (again, this is a mild clime), you can tuck into Christmas dinner on site with the Camping Sopalmo team.

Disliked: Asked for sunny spot when booking but was put in shady spot. Only spot left. Electric supply intermittent struggled to run fridge .

Liked: This is what we look for in a Spanish site, quaint, rustic charm, lovely gardens, very feel good. We booked for four nights on Pitch Up, app, worked out at €24 a night, very good value. On arrival we were greeted by the nice lady owner, who welcomed us. There are tremendous walking opportunities in this area, all immediately accessible from the site. The toilets, were frequently cleaned. Mojacar Playa, is a nice walk or cycle away on the coastal path. There is a bus for those with no dogs. We would certainly return.

Liked: Found this place absolutely lovely
Not a lot going on roundabout but if you’re going to walk about 35 minutes down the hill you can get a bus into the village. A taxi back will cost you approximately €15 but there is a bus twice a day that goes past the site.
If you decide to walk up the hill approximately 2 km, there’s another village whether there is a couple of bars and restaurants
There is a bar on the site small snacks only the prices are very good considering where you are but if you want to do proper shopping, you would have to go down to the village which is great if you’ve got transport. The washing facility is cleaning facilities are absolutely excellent. Can’t wait to get back.

Liked: Very clean showers and toilets, host/owner friendly and helpful. Decent sized plots on lower level. Quiet and out of the way. Electricity seemed to work well

Disliked: Very basic site, a good 10 minute drive away from Mojácar, so you need transport if you are staying there.

Liked: Location, in the hills, shady pitches excellent facilities, friendly host, cafe/bar not open as too early in season, no problem for us. Mostly level pitches in three tiers. Turn right Mojocar 15 mins in van lots of parking spaces for bars cafes etc.or turn left Sopalmo village cafes and bars. Loved it.

Disliked: Not a very good path yet to nearest beach if you wanted to walk, looks as if its not finished yet though.

Local attractions

Coast, nature park or mountains first? But wait, lots of trad Spanish villages are in the area around Camping Sopalmo too, so have a peaceful and sunny wander through Níjar, Sorbas, Garrucha, Carboneras and Mojácar, all within a short drive. And leave a couple of days at least for Mojácar: once you've spent a day basking on the sands of Mojácar Playa, spend another wandering along the water's edge and then another in Mojácar town, which has seen humans tread its terrain for over 2,000 years. Mojácar Playa is at the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera mountain range: hire a car to drive through its roads, particularly the mountain road toward Cabrera via the El Dondo and La Adelfa (there are parts where you mightn't want to look down). By foot or wheel, hikes and mountain bike rides are well-travelled paths around here too. At the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Park, a popular place with natives and non-natives, you could hike around the Sierra del Cabo de Gata mountains or go scuba diving among the marine life of its tiny offshore islands. Birdwatching, photography, geology trips and boat trips are all also easily available.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 14 day(s) of arrival.

Dogs

A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.
Dogs are prohibited from main facilities and amenities.
Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
