- Dog-friendly farm site in the Serra de S. Mamede Nature Park
- A 15-minute drive from Portalegre, with wineries and hikes nearby
- Outdoor swimming pool on site and regular starry skies
Whether you’re tackling trails, relaxing or browsing typical Alentejo towns, Quinta da Dourada will quickly acquaint you with the ways of Portalegre in Portugal. The dog-friendly site is based on a farm in the Serra de S. Mamede Nature Park, a protected area with mountains and regular starry skies.
In fact, the owners of Quinta da Dourada say that one of the first things many guests proclaim is, ‘Are there that many stars in the sky?’. With the quiet atmosphere, fresh air and starry skies, this is a top spot to lie back and admire the Milky Way when the conditions are right.
It goes without saying that you should get plenty of rest here. That’s exactly what Nuno Malato Correia intended when she started reconverting the family property into the current site. That’s not to say that there isn’t anything to do at the retreat. On the contrary, there’s an outdoor swimming pool and animals, a fountain and a stream to wander around.
When you’re not unwinding on site, there are hiking trails across the slopes and plains, with the highest point being at 1025 metres above sea level. Take yourself to a winery or oil mill; there are many within a short drive of the site.
The area’s just as excellent for those who want a taste of the local gastronomy, with regional specialities like lamb stew, Boleima cake or Elvas plums available in towns like Portalegre (15 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
What might you tick off your bucket list first? If waterfalls have made your list, there are a couple of excellent spots about. Cascata de São Julião (10 minutes’ drive) has an almost 12-metre drop masked by the trees and Cascata da Cabroeira (25 minutes) is sublime for wading in the shallows.
It’s highly likely that you’ll be looking to browse a few Alentejo towns too. Portalegre (15 minutes) has a church, castle and plenty of cobbled streets. Castelo de Vide (half an hour) is equally as splendid, with characteristic white houses, steep medieval streets and fountains thought to contain healing water.
A historic spot for your itinerary is Castle of Marvão (half an hour) too, a medieval fortress built by King Dinis with two cisterns and sublime views over slopes.
