  • Peaceful stays on a farm 35 minutes’ drive from Coimbra
  • Figueira da Foz beaches 25 minutes’ drive; Nazaré one hour
  • Resident animals; horse-riding classes; small pool; pizza oven
A farm with resident horses, goats and chickens (plus a rather regal ostrich) is the peaceful setting for Quinta da Colina dos Moutinhos, which sits on the outskirts of the small town of Carapinheira (five minutes’ drive), between the beaches of Figueira da Foz (25 minutes) and the historic city of Coimbra (35 minutes). The presence of critters should make animal-loving kids pretty happy, especially since it’s possible to get up close and personal, whether by feeding and petting them, or by booking an animal-based experience, such as a workshop in natural horsemanship (please note that there is an additional cost for this). If your kids are immune to the charm of farmyard beasties, they can still have an excellent time here perfecting their star jumps on the trampoline or splashing around in the small pool. And while the kids busy themselves around the site, parents can indulge in a spot of rest and relaxation, perhaps daydreaming in the hammock as they listen to birdsong, taking in the spectacular hilly landscape of central Portugal or exploring nearby trails with the family dog in tow. If exploring sounds like too strenuous an activity, your canine companion can still have a good run-around at the on-site dog park. (Other amenities include a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests and a launderette.) Come the evening, residents gather around the two food-making stations – a barbecue area and a pizza oven – to prepare meals that they can enjoy alfresco, at picnic tables dotted around the site.

Liked: The campsite is right on the farm. It's surrounded by so many different animals. And beautiful spaces of nature. There's a little river, a few ponds, a big forest. It's magical. The campsite has all amenities that are clean and looked after. Lovely shower. Filipa was absolutely amazing, so friendly, warm and kind!

Disliked: They could do with an extra toilet.

Local attractions

At the mouth of the Mondego River, Figueira da Foz is a genteel seaside town with an elegant turn-of-the-20th-century district (the so-called Bairro Novo), plus archaeological and ethnographic exhibits at the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha. However, the main reason to visit Figueira is its expansive stretch of sand, pounded by Atlantic waves. Coimbra, the former capital of Portugal, is renowned for its ancient university, which includes a lush botanical garden, the ornate Joanina Library and an old-fashioned cabinet of curiosities at the Museu da Ciência. Across the Mondego River, the Miradouro Santa Clara has splendid views of the city. A day in Nazaré (one hour’s drive) might get you hooked on surfing, whether you just sit on the sand and marvel at the acrobatic displays by expert athletes or decide to have a go yourself (there’s a surf school at the northern end of the beach).
