It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious five-hectare site in the Serra da Cabreira mountains
- Around an hour's drive from Braga, Guimarães and Porto
- Honesty bar, breakfasts and regular barbecue nights in high season
So, you’re after something rural, eh? A place with plenty of space, fresh air, gorgeous views, and a refreshing lack of crowds of people and dinging gadgetry?
And on top of that you want free donkey hugs? (There’s a phrase you don’t hear too often.) In that case you need the aptly-named Quinta Rural, a five-hectare site in the Serra da Cabreira mountains, 15 minutes’ drive from Cabeceiras de Basto and its associated urban amenities such as supermarkets.
In an unusual move, consider first what’s not here… there’s no wifi, and no TV... but panic not – you’re unlikely to miss them once you’ve embraced free-range frolics instead. Days of hiking, horse riding and canyoning can all be had nearby, or you may opt to put your feet up and gaze out over those mountains with a glass of vinho verde (there’s plenty of space for the kids to scamper about while you relax, plus donkeys to play with and a chemical-free plunge pool to ease any overheating).
Not stocked up with your own provisions, or run out of wine (gasp)? Skip along to the barn, where there’s an honesty bar and breakfasts and snacks on request. If you’re here in summer you should also plan to grab a space at the long table for one (preferably more) of the regular barbecue nights.
Traditional life rules in many aspects of life here – the exception being the plumbing, which is bang up to date so you can rest assured that proper toilets and hot showers will be on hand (although there’s also a dry toilet for those aiming to go really rural).

Local attractions
Make sure you include suitably comfy footwear on the packing list for jaunts here: guests are provided with a nifty map of local routes, leading to waterfalls, villages, vineyards or natural pools for swimming. And if your legs yearn to tramp more trails, you’re only about a 45-minute drive from the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Horse riding, mountain bike trails, paragliding and canyoning can also be sorted in the surrounds – when you arrive, procure a drink and flick through the handy info book in the barn for ideas and details. In season there are likely to be guided hikes, winery visits and other organised outings heading out from the site.
Urban days may not be high on your priority list with all this on offer, but it’s worth noting that there are also some mighty fine cities to visit nearby: day trips to Guimarães (50 minutes), Braga (50 minutes) and Porto (an hour and 15 minutes) are all eminently doable for sightseeing, foodie foraging and (particularly in Porto) sampling local tipples.
