- Small site on an Alentejo wine estate 25 minutes’ drive from Mértola
- Guadiana Valley Natural Park and birdwatching 10 minutes’ drive
- Vineyard tours, wine tastings and gourmet experiences available
There’s something rather elegant about pitching up at Herdade Foz da Represa, 25 minutes’ drive from the culture-packed ‘white town’ of Mértola in Alentejo. Perhaps it’s because the small handful of touring pitches are part of a grand estate surrounding a graceful – and storied – 19th-century mansion, once a meeting place for freemasons and a backdrop for several Portuguese films.
Or perhaps it’s the variety of gourmet experiences on offer (all of which need to be booked in advance). As well as organised tours to other vineyards, there are daily tours of Herdade Foz da Represa estate itself, and you can also sample their wines along with gastronomic specialities of the Alentejo region, including petiscos (the Portuguese answer to Spanish tapas, for the uninitiated).
On a general day-to-day basis, all your foodie issues are covered too: fresh bread is delivered every morning, and you can also pre-order sandwiches, salads and soups to keep you going on your Alentejo adventures. If you’re into alfresco catering, you can rent barbecues, and the estate owners recommend local black pork for the grill.
This is a place that’s very much designed for self-contained campers – there’s a very smart modern toilet block here, but showers and electricity are not available. Fresh water is also not supplied, but you can pick that up five minutes’ drive away at the local petrol station.

Local attractions
The Alentejo is well known for its excellent food and wine, and as you tour the area you should come across plenty of wineries and places to sample some of the local dishes. But before you get to those, perhaps you’d like to work up a good thirst and appetite? If so, riverside walks beckon in the Pego da Vaca area (five minutes’ drive), as do hikes and wildlife watching in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park (10 minutes). Guided birdwatching tours can be organised locally if you’d like the help of an expert.
Maybe a dip would appeal too? There are pools fed by sulphur-rich streams at Água Santa da Morena (25 minutes), or you could choose the Mina de São Domingos River Beach (40 minutes), which has warm waters and facilities including a playground, bar and toilets.
For a bit of insight into local history and culture, start with a visit to Mértola (25 minutes), a classic ‘white town’ with Moorish architecture, a souk and a medieval castle. The Núcleo Museológico Mosteiro - Museu de Mértola Cláudio Torres (half an hour), in a restored old monastery, is worth a visit too.
