  • Between the beach and pine forest in Praia de Mira
  • Within an hour's drive of Porto, Aveiro and Coimbra
  • Open-air pool in high season, with poolside bar terrace
A long dune-backed sandy beach on one side, a lush pine forest on the other, and a short stroll from Barrinha lake to boot… it’s safe to say that Mira Lodge Park is in a splendid spot for fresh-air activities in the Aveiro area. The beach in question is the one that belongs to the seaside village of Praia de Mira, the centre of which is a 15-minute stroll away for shops, bars and places to eat. Much time is likely to be spent out on the sands, either swimming in the sea or snapping pics of the colourful fishing boats; freshwater splashing is easily accessed too, as guests can hire paddleboards and pedalos to potter about on the lake. If that’s not enough activity yet, set out on a 30-kilometre walking/bike trail that leads from the site to take in dunes, the lake, woods and the beach. Day trips for those setting sights further afield might include Aveiro, Coimbra and Porto, all of which can be reached with a drive of an hour or less. Time to collapse after all that? Head to the site’s open-air pool (open in high season), settle at the poolside bar for well-earned drinks and snacks, or crash out on the comfy seating in the common room. Those still with some get-up-and-go in them can gather pals for games of football and volleyball at the multisports court or seek out table tennis, tennis and table football around the grounds. A barbecue area with picnic tables is also on site, as are a mini market and a laundry service.

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: Swimming poo

Disliked: Shit site for motorhome. Noisy pitches near swimming pool and bar. Some of the toilet facilities were closed or just closed at inconvenient times. Didn't like the fact that they hassled me for payment before we arrived

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: Convenient location short walk to town centre. Nice location by a lake. Toilets were clean (no toilet roll). Staff in reception were friendly and helpful.

Would only stay here for one night

EHU was good and so was wifi.

Disliked: Site was run down, many old caravans which were used as residential vans. Some old buildings the site resembled a Second world war camp. We went in march so pool not open, but will need significant refurbishment if its to open in May.

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: The positives were a friendly welcome and a flat pitch with matting so we could drive on and off easily and the site was very quiet (only 2 other vans).

Disliked: Sadly, there are more negatives. This site is neglected and tired. It needs a lot of investment to bring it up to scratch. The black water area has no cover and contained paper and faeces.
You will need a car or bikes to get to the beach area.

Local attractions

Abandon the beach kit (temporarily) and take a wander into the village for a bit of a history fix at the Ethnographic Museum of Praia de Mira (10 minutes’ walk). If you’ve got an eye for retro gadgets, head instead to Radiolândia radio museum (25 minutes’ drive) to see a collection of wireless sets from across the ages. For a bit of town time, head to Aveiro (half an hour) to wander along the canals and perhaps pick up something tasty for tea at the fish market; or set your sights on Coimbra (50 minutes) to take in the cathedral and Machado de Castro National Museum before catching some tunes in one of the city’s famed fado bars. Those fond of a local tipple or few would do well to include a trip to Porto (an hour) on the schedule – intersperse visits to the city’s famed port cellars with roams around the Ribeira district, boat trips on the Douro and strolls on the Dom Luís Bridge.
