- Family campsite on a Podlasie farm 10 minutes’ drive from Dziadkowice
- Holy Mountain half an hour’s drive; Białowieża National Park an hour
- Quad-bike tours, bubble football and bouncy castle; sauna and hot tubs
In need of a break with the kids? Gather them up and head to Pustelnia Sękalik Pole Kamperowe, a wonderfully family-friendly campsite set on a spectacularly beautiful, 100-year-old farm surrounded by greenery and half-timbered barns. Ten minutes’ drive from Dziadkowice in the uber-rural region of Podlasie, this is a peaceful spot far, far away from other houses and busy roads; your only neighbours will be wild animals flitting among the trees.
The fun starts the minute you hit the site; you can let younger kids loose on the bouncy castle, oversee competitive games of bubble football, badminton or table football, and send off your teens on quad-bike tours of the farm (safety helmets provided). If you require a little soothing downtime all to yourself, take advantage of the sauna and hot tub, or stroll the winding footpaths through the farm’s private forest.
There are communal barbecues for cooking up alfresco feasts in the summer kitchen, plus picnic seating and hammocks around the firepits – the latter are just the ticket for putting your feet up and sneaking in a post-prandial snooze. However you choose to spend your time on site, you’ll all go home recharged and ready to face 21st-century life once more.

Local attractions
Big-hitting attractions in this rural corner of Podlasie include the spectacular Białowieża National Park (about an hour’s drive), where you can take pony-and-trap rides through primaeval forest. If you’re very lucky, you might get to see wild bison grazing in glades or spot elk lurking among the trees. Another sure-fire hotspot for nature lovers is Biebrza National Park (an hour and 15 minutes) for hot-air balloon rides far above the marshes and woodland, birdwatching for eagles and the chance to spot endangered beavers in the Biebrza River or hear wolves howling at sunset.
In more cultural pursuits, stop by the Castle of the Crowns of Podlasie (half an hour) a stone folly created in the early 21st century in the shape of a crown, or lean more about the centuries-old traditions of Podlasie at the Museum of Agriculture in Ciechanowiec (40 minutes), an open-air display of recreated wooden farm dwellings, church and windmills.
Make a pilgrimage to the fascinating Holy Mountain of Grabarka to check out all the crosses left as prayer offerings, or stop by Drohiczyn (both half an hour) to see its fine array of whitewashed baroque-era and orthodox churches.
