- Tidy family-friendly holiday park in Whitianga
- A 15-minute walk to the beach; half an hour’s drive to Hot Water Beach
- Within walking distance of restaurants, shops and watersports
Whitianga… Any lads or lasses who are yet to hear of this trendy town on the Coromandel Peninsula are in for a treat at Mercury Bay Holiday Park. The tidy family-friendly holiday park is a short walk from the centre of Whitianga and 15 minutes’ walk from the start of its sandy beaches. There are often farmers’ markets on the weekends, splendid surf breaks across Mercury Bay and of course, watersports and boating trips of all sorts any day of the week.
A trio of larger urban areas are within two and half hour’s drive of Mercury Bay Holiday Park, including Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. However, the central location on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula means that beaches with geothermal hot waters, local sea caves and crazy coral reefs are a short drive away - that’s a huge highlight here.
Whether you spend your days snorkelling, on forest walks or filling yourself up with seafood like scallops, Mercury Bay Holiday Park is a quiet, relaxed place to return to. Great facilities are a given. There are grassy spaces for playing cricket and other games, a playground, a communal barbecue area and a swimming pool.
Leave your car behind too. Whitianga’s many restaurants, shops and beaches are within walking distance, so you’re sorted whether food, sand or surf is on your brain.

Local attractions
With mineral water underneath its fine sand, Hot Water Beach (half an hour’s drive) is a unique place to spend a day at a Pacific beach. Come low tide or two hours on either side, it’s possible to dig your own hot pool. Easterly swells are on-hand for surfers too.
The Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve (35 minutes) is a splendid scuba and snorkel spot. Between Hahei Beach and Cathedral Cove, there’s a one-hour trek to an arched cavern, a cove with shady Pohutukawa trees - picnic, anyone?
Perhaps you’re after more peaceful beach strolls with big Pohutukawa trees or a nikau forest as scenery. That’s the case at New Chums Beach (40 minutes).
Coromandel (50 minutes) is on the coast too, but there’s more than just sand. The Driving Creek Railway makes its ascent to the Eyefull Tower for views of Hauraki Gulf and Islands, passing by forests and pottery sculptures. A gold mining history museum also recalls the town’s mining past.
