Need a break from the pace of your normal life? At Camping de Oude Rijn, a five-minute drive – or short cycle – from the neighbouring town of Ter Aar in South Holland, it's time to slow it all down with some laidback activities. What a spot: the site is only 25 minutes' drive away from the Keukenhof flower garden and 45 minutes from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Golfing fans, listen up too: the greens at Zeegersloot golf club are five minutes' drive from the site, where wannabe pros can do some practising on the driving range, take lessons and play their way around 27 holes, then thoroughly sample the eats and drinks of the bar-restaurant. Anglers can throw out a line from the fishing piers at Zegerplas, under 10 minutes’ drive from the site, and reel in perch, roach, bream or pike. Zegerplas not fulfilling your fishing dreams? The Kromme Aar waterway or the further afield Noordeinderplas might tick the right boxes. Back on site, cook up some fish on the barbecue (bring your own, please) and tuck in beside a campfire. If you didn't have any luck with the rod and reel, there are plenty of shops in Ter Aar to pick up the essentials.

Disliked: Pas d électricité à cause de la pluie la nuit, les sanitaires n'étaient pas propres, poubelles débordantes à l'entrée. Vieux bâtiment, pas d'éclairage au bloc vaisselle.
Pas de possibilité de se recharger en eau. Pour vider la caissette des toilettes : cuve très sale sans aucune possibilité de rinçage.
Un service très très moyen à un prix élevé.

Liked: The location of the site was excellent—peaceful and ideally situated for exploring the surrounding area

Disliked: The site was rundown and poorly maintained. The toilet emptying point was disgustingly dirty with no rinse water available, and I was told there was no facility to fill up my camper with fresh water.

Fine for a night or 2 if you have own facilities on board.

Liked: Good location. Nice walk to Zegerplas. Town is about 5km but all on cycle paths (it is Holland after all).

Excellent WiFi on site.

Reasonably priced.

Disliked: Site was very tired and needed a bit of TLC. Male facilities were OK but understand ladies were quite grubby. A little disappointing as a deep clean followed by routine cleaning to keep up to scratch would not be too time consuming.

Local attractions

Camping de Oude Rijn is well placed for those who want the peace and quiet of the countryside but also days out on urban adventures: the site is in a central location within 45 minutes' drive of The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. On rural days, take a trip to Nieuwkoopse Plassen nature reserve (10 minutes' drive) for boat trips, water safaris, canoeing, walking and birdwatching, or head to the Netherlands’ oldest botanical gardens at Hortus Botanicus (half an hour) to see what a 16th-century garden looked like. If you’re staying at Camping de Oude Rijn during the spring, a trip to the tulip garden at Keukenhof (25 minutes) is an absolute must. Travel buddies getting on your nerves? Never fear, there’s a non-violent way to fix everything: climb inside some plastic bubbles and let your rage out with a game of bubble football at BumperFootball (25 minutes) in Leiden. If that whets your appetite for more activity, waterski, wakeboard or kneeboard at Wet ‘n Wild (10 minutes) at Zegerplas. There are plenty of theme parks in the area for kids and adults to explore: take a stroll through the history of the Netherlands – from prehistory to the Romans and on to the Middle Ages – at Archeon Museumpark, 10 minutes from Camping de Oude Rijn, or head to the amusement parks at Drievliet (half an hour) or Duinrell (half an hour) to raise your adrenaline on the rides.
