This rustic site makes a handy base for those looking to explore the region: Terheijden is 10 minutes away by road, pretty Breda 20 minutes away and the outdoorsy pursuits of Biesbosch National Park within 40 minutes.
Munnickenheide Buitengewoon Overnachten also has direct access to the Zuiderwaterlinie footpath: stroll through the towns, forts and rural spots dotted along its 290 kilometres if you're looking to blow away the cobwebs. If you're looking for more tips on the surrounding area, the friendly folk that run this place are long-standing locals and will be happy to offer advice.
Although the site’s no longer a working farm, pigs and chickens still roam over these lush grassy grounds. Ask for some freshly laid eggs to scramble, poach or fry in the shared kitchen; if you don't want to be up when the cock crows, leave the cooking to the staff and indulge in a breakfast made from locally sourced ingredients. Other facilities include a launderette, bike hire and free wifi. Barbecues are allowed and a supermarket is on hand five minutes' drive away if you need to stock up on essentials.

Liked: Loved the quiet location with very helpful, kind & respectful owners.
It is small but perfectly formed. Clean, modern facilities.
Great beer, brewed by the owners. Wi-Fi is brilliant.
Would definitely return if in the area.
Disliked: Nothing really. Maybe some more shaded pitches, but I think, like England, the really hot weather is probably not a frequent occurrence.

Route directions
Because Munnickenheide is on the border of two municipalities, it is possible that your satnav may show that you've arrived 300 metres too early if you drive via Oosterhout/Den Hout. Similarly, if you come via Breda/Terheijden, look for the site on the right side about 300 metres before the final destination.
Because of the low viaduct (2.40m) on the road, the recommended route is via Den Hout. Look for the site on the left hand side (number 20).

Local attractions
This is a quiet spot, but that doesn't mean that you can't keep active on your hols: golf, a public pool and a spa are all under five minutes' drive from base.
To get a flavour for the local countryside, head for Drimmelen (15 minutes' drive), a waterside town with a marina and opportunities to hire a craft of your own. There's more nature around these parts than you could shake a stick at: Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park is within easy reach (30 minutes), as is Biesbosch National Park (40 minutes), a hub for sailors, cyclists and walkers.
If you'd rather be city-bound, make tracks for Breda (20 minutes), a lively riverside town with some of the best shops and restaurants around. There's plenty of history here too, including the Great Church, the Begijnhof and a stately castle. If your time team is hankering for more, take them to Loevestein Castle (35 minutes), a picture-worthy fortress at the confluence of the Meuse and Waal.
For those with kids in tow, plan a magic-themed day out at Efteling theme park (30 minutes), or alternatively head for the adrenaline-boosting rides and slides of Beekse Bergen (35 minutes).
