Who's up for a whole load of frolics and family days in the Netherlands? With hiking, biking and waterways close by, a swimming pool on site – and a setting a mega-easy five kilometres from a tiptop dinosaur park? Have a stay at big, fun and friendly Camping Wedderbergen in the Groningen province if this ticks all your holiday boxes, in a land of ancient forests and lakes, river valleys and animal parks. The setting first of all, of course: Camping Wedderbergen has its own private lake with a sandy beach and play area exclusively for guests' use. Permits to go fishing on site can be bought for a nominal fee at reception, and fishing tournaments for all ages are held on a regular basis for those who like to feel competitive (recommended…). There's also an indoor play area for kids up to the age of 12 with slides, trampoline zones, a toddler zone, a power tower and a climbable 'volcano'. Around the area, hire a bike or canoe on site to explore the local cycle paths and waterways, or potter along over 30 hiking trails running through the forests and river valleys of Westerwolde. Plenty of popular family attractions are within easy driving distance too, like Dino Park Tenaxx, the Watersports Centre Veendam and Wildlands Adventure Zoo. Wedderbergen also has a big heated indoor pool with one slide and a large outdoor water playground with more slides, plus a restaurant and a convenience store selling essentials, draught beer and freshly baked bread and croissants. The modern amenities on site include an accessible heated toilet and shower block (with a separate parent and baby washroom) and a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers. Free wifi is also provided to guests.

10-amp fully-serviced grass pitch (no pets)

Liked: Large open pitches each with water & electricity. Ultra clean toilet block, cleaned at least 3+ times a day even when site was nearly empty! Very helpful staff. Good spacious indoor swimming pool with flume. Nice outdoor pool for kids with pleasant seating area (when the weather was suitable, we were 3 nights late August when was wet & cold). Would be ideal site for families with young kids.

Disliked: Over complicated electronic shower system with pre-paid dongle gizmo. You get soaked working out exactly how they work and then they are too powerful with no adjustment possible. Hate to think what happens if it runs out of money mid shower!! No hot water in the washing cubicles a definite negative for such an expensive camp-site (by far the most costly of our 4 Dutch & Belgian sites). Even the re-cycling needed the electronic dongle to get rid of your trash!!
Restaurant complex was very modern, nicely equipped and large but again not very personnel with self service ordering of mostly fast food via electronic screens with bank card only pre-payment (think McDonalds fast food!). Not a lot of cosy ambience to be had.
The thought of what site might be like when at near to full capacity. It was at literally only about 10% full for our 3 nights 26-28 Aug '23 and felt quite lonely (thus we were allowed to choose virtually any free pitch we could see). With only one toilet block for such a large site of 200-300(?) touring pitches and hundreds more statics, cabins etc, access to the facilities when full might be very challenging?

16-amp fully-serviced grass pitch (no pets)

Liked: Excellent facilities, indoor pool with slide, interactive gaming indoor play area kids loved (age 7,11 & 14)
Outdoor water slides got turned on on the hot days but be careful as it becomes very slippery
Food was incredible - kid size pizzas are plenty big enough for adults. We got the bucket of chips for 4 ppl and still had over half left there was loads!

Liked: Sehr schöner Stellplatz von der Größe optimal mit Vorzelt und kleinen Zeltplatz genug Angelmöglichkeiten direkt vor der Tür Kinder Bespaßung mit dabei

Disliked: WLAN nur sehr schwach im Wohnmobil gehabt

Local attractions

Take a bike or canoe out along the local paths or waterways, wander the local hiking paths or stick around the site for basking, swimming and fishing at the Camping Wedderbergen private lake and beach. After all that, it's a five-kilometre drive to the dinosaurs, dino hunt, mini archaeological digs and assault course of Dino Park Tenaxx, and about 21 kilometres to the boating, wakeboarding, waterskiing and more of Watersports Centre Veendam. Wildlands Adventure Zoo is 45 kilometres away, at Emmen. Also an excellent option for families (and history geeks) is the village of Bourtange, 15 kilometres away, home of a famed and restored 16th-century star-shaped fort and open-air museum telling the story of the fort, the village and its role in the Eighty Years' War and onwards. A tourist information centre is in the village if you want to go on from here around the region of Westerwolde. Groningen city is just under 50 kilometres away for day trips, or you could go and see the doe-eyed inhabitants at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre, 73 kilometres away in Pieterburen.

Admission

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

Bookings are nominative and non-transferable.
Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.
Quiet hours must be respected between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.
This site does have a catch-and-return fishing policy in place.
You'll need an Environment Agency rod licence (you'll need to apply for this beforehand).

Pitches

Pitches: a €25.00 (£20.78) deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure when returning the gate badge/barrier pass/toilet keys.
Units should not be left unoccupied unless previously agreed with the management. Please speak to reception when the need arises, a fee may be charged for unsupervised units.
You must follow the management directives when pitching your tent/unit and related equipment.

Pool

Only park guests are authorised to use the pool.

Safety

Barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground and attended by an adult at all times.
Firearms are not permitted.
Open fires are prohibited.

Vehicles

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
No vehicle movement between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m..
Only one car is to be parked by the pitch. Extra vehicles must be parked in the designated area.
