Young, old, four-legged – it doesn’t matter when you grab a spot at Camping Meerwijck, a family-friendly site that welcomes all kinds of guests, including those travelling with dogs. On the shores of lake Zuidlaardermeer, 25 minutes’ drive away from the North Netherlands city of Groningen, it’s also got a reel of facilities that should appeal to all… First on the list should be the sandy beach alongside the lake, or perhaps the beach club for meals overlooking the water. The whole family can go fishing directly from the site (a sunset session maybe?) or hire e-bikes to pedal around the shore. You can also take a boat trip across the lake from the marina or head out to explore the shoreline on foot if you like to stroll. Weather forcing you indoors? No matter – there's a heated indoor pool where you can continue the water-based fun. The local area has plenty to please too, from forests, fens and heathland to pretty villages and cities with historical sites and many gorgeous terraces for a drink or coffee (a Dutch iced coffee, perhaps?). Camping Meerwijck is a 25-minute drive from the centre of Groningen (also accessible by bicycle, train or boat), where there are long shopping streets and attractions like the canalside Groninger Museum. Assen is a 35-minute drive away, with a tea museum and the 1854 Drents Museum displaying Van Gogh artworks.

  • Facilities/activities including Electrisch laden auto's are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
  • The grocery shop is open between 29/03 and 03/11.
  • Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
  • Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Excellence 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Überall Spielplätze, Schwimmbad, der Aufbau des Campingplatzes, die Lage, viele freundliche Mitarbeiter (teils deutschsprachig), das Charlet inklusive Ausstattung.

Disliked: Nicht alles geöffnet zu der Zeit, als wir da waren. Waschräume (einer recht schnutzig) entweder per App oder Kartenzahlung, mit 6 Euro pro Waschgang zu viel, Restaurant nur am Wochenende offen, Brötchenapp ging nicht, Pitchup-Preis war nicht korrekt, WLAN etwas zu schlecht.

Liked: Massive site, great pitch, easy access to lake, easy access to beach restaurant. Walked to local station to visit local city which was cheap and easy and city had similar vibe to amsterdam in terms of atmosphere but not so busy.

Disliked: Nothing really

Local attractions

Budding historian or wildlife watcher, hiker or cyclist, outdoorsy or not, there’s plenty to see out and around Camping Meerwijck. Zuidlaren (15 minutes’ drive) is a nice starting point, with a windmill museum and the family-friendly Sprookjeshof Zuidlaren (10 minutes) attraction with indoor play areas, slides and a toboggan run. For a quick trip before lunch or dinner, Heemtuin Muntendam (15 minutes) has splendid boardwalks over local ponds and a little pitstop where you could treat the kids to pastries. Kids should also like ogling at the creepy crawlies at DoeZoo Insektenwereld (45 minutes) and the bigger creatures at animal parks like Wildlands (50 minutes). There are lots of amusement parks within driving distance, like Nienoord (40 minutes), which has a petting zoo and outdoor activities on the grounds of a historic mansion. For a bit of history, Bourtange (50 minutes) has a star-shaped fort built in 1593. Orvelte (50 minutes) is also full of interesting bits – it's almost like a living museum, as it has a sawmill, wooden shoemaker and blacksmith. Up north are the East Frisian islands too. Borkum, the largest of them all and home to a seal colony and gorgeous dunes, is accessible by a ferry from Eemshaven (40 minutes’ drive and an hour and 15 minutes’ ferry).
