It’s all about relaxing and unwinding in leafy, sustainable surroundings at Camping Welgelegen Workum, a family site five minutes’ drive from Workum in Friesland. Practise yoga under the trees, take a dip in the eco-friendly swimming pond – there’s no chlorine to sting your eyes in this pool – and cool off on summer days under the apple and pear trees in the 100-year-old orchard. The grass pitches are sheltered by mature trees and hedgerows too, as are the neatly landscaped parking spaces. A modern shower block with the added bonuses of a yoga room and shared kitchen was built from recycled and bio-based materials. To explore the area sustainably, leave the car behind and rent a canoe, bicycle or paddleboard – and to reduce your carbon footprint further, ditch the car completely and arrive by train into Hindeloopen station, 15 minutes’ walk away. There’s absolutely no need to lift a finger in the catering department if you don’t want to (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ drive away if you insist on cooking), as a food service starts with the breakfast buffet showcasing regional Frisian dishes and segues into pizzas, ice cream and organic apples from the orchard later in the day. Saturday evenings are given over to ‘grilling and chilling’ around the communal barbecue for a chance to meet fellow guests for a chat. If you’re after some sporting action, take kitesurfing lessons at the site’s school before heading out onto IJsselmeer waves (five minutes’ drive).

Liked: Het nette, zeer schone en vrij nieuwe sanitairgebouw. Verder vonden we de sfeer goed op de camping. Er waren veel kitesurfers en dat zorgt een beetje voor een sportieve vibe. In het weekend werd er bijvoorbeeld ook yoga gegeven. Betalen ging grotendeels achteraf en online. Dat was voor ons de eerste keer en zo kan je ook weer zien dat het vrij modern is allemaal. Leuke camping voor kinderen. Speelgoed, skelters en fietsjes in overvloed.

Complimenten voor de nette staat van het gehele terrein.

Disliked: Vanwege een onderzoek naar de kwaliteit van het water was het natuurbad gesloten. Dat vonden we jammer.

Soms roken we bij onze camperplaats een rioollucht. We stonden erg dichtbij het sanitairgebouw en de afvalverzamelplaats.

Sommige gasten hadden hun camper met bijbehorende tent heel ruimtelijk opgezet, waardoor we er echt nét niet tussen pasten. Mogelijk zou je met wat hulp van de organisatie voor een betere indeling kunnen zorgen. Of misschien kan je de plekken zichtbaar afbakenen.

Liked: Toller Campingplatz mit nettem Naturpool, Liegen und schönem Obstgarten zum Verweilen.
Sanitärhaus sehr sauber und modern. Nutzung der Gemeinschaftsküche und des Kühlschranks war sehr hilfreich.

Disliked: Leider ist beim Strom ständig die Sicherung heraus gesprungen.
Der Lärm von der angrenzenden Straße war nachts recht störend.

Local attractions

Keen to crank up those kitesurfing skills? The strong winds and consistent waves of IJsselmeer provide several spots for doing just that. Depending on wind direction, Workum, Hindeloopen (both five minutes’ drive), Mirns (15 minutes) and Cornwerd (20 minutes) are all favourites with locals in the know. And it’s not just kitesurfing here – have a go at dinghy sailing or go extreme and try wing foiling too. No wind at all? No problem. Go paddleboarding on Fluessen lake (15 minutes), attempt the waterski course on Sneekermeer (half an hour) or rent a motorboat (10 minutes) to have a putter along the IJsselmeer shoreline dotted with pretty fishing villages. Those of you who prefer to do your exploring on terra firma can follow the Zuiderzee Route cycling route (10 minutes by bike) through pleasingly flat countryside dotted with windmills, or bike sections of the Frisian Eleven Towns Tour, taking in pretty canal-side towns packed with gabled buildings like Leeuwarden (two and a half hours) and Makkum (45 minutes).
