When it comes to cycling holidays, the Netherlands always deliver – and how. And this is true for Camping de Achte, a peaceful spot on a farm surrounded by the splendid, lush nature of the Friesland province, in the north of the country. De Achte sits in a triangle formed by the towns of Wommels (five minutes’ drive or a pleasant 10-minute bike ride), Bolsward and Sneek (a quarter of an hour by car; half an hour by bike for both), so you’ll have plenty of choice when you fancy eating out or shopping, whether for groceries for the barbecue or for Dutch souvenirs for your family and friends back home. If you don’t have your own wheels, cycle hire is available on site, and there are heaps of flat routes for the entire family to explore in the vicinity. These include the fascinating It Fryske Fersepaad poetry trails, which are punctuated by boards printed with verses, and the Trekpad, which follows the placid course of the Leeuwardervaart river. When they’re not happily pedalling around on their bikes, the children can have a go at the go-karts and pedal tractors on site, or let off some steam in the playground. Mind you, once they discover the resident ponies, you might struggle to get them away from the paddock… And if the weather should take a turn, there are board games and craft supplies in the spacious common room. Amenities include a well-maintained toilet block with showers; a kitchenette with a kettle, communal fridge and washing-up area; and recycling points.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Wonderfully warm welcome on our arrival. This is a very peaceful spot surrounded by farmland and endless walking and cycling opportunities.
The facilities block was excellent; well equipped and spotless.
As the field was far too wet to drive onto, following weeks of wet weather, we were very happy to park our van on the owners drive and were still able to access the electric hook-up. We also enjoyed the company of the very friendly cats!

Local attractions

With exhibits including shipbuilding blueprints, ship ornaments and boat models (plus temporary art displays), the Frisian Maritime Museum in Sneek illustrates the history of the town’s seafaring heritage. Sneek is also known for its 15th-century Waterpoort, a large city gate flanked by two tall towers. The ceiling of a small canalside building in Franeker (20 minutes’ drive) features what is thought to be the world’s oldest working model of the universe, dating back to the 18th century. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium also displays astronomical instruments and a digital collection of scientific manuscripts. The watery landscape of De Alde Feanen National Park (35 minutes) is a great spot for birdwatchers, who might catch glimpses of cormorants and herons diving into canals, peat holes and lakes to catch fish. There are plenty of waterside trails in this nature area, but the best way to explore is on a canoe or by electric boat.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
Please pick any available pitch on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 4 day(s) of arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

Bookings must not be for more than 30 consecutive nights.
In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
