Whether you’re after an active holiday or a relaxing time with your family, you might want to give Camping Si-Es-An a go. Sitting in the valley of the river Reest, in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this peaceful site with spacious pitches is surrounded by green vegetation. The village of Balkbrug, with its shops and restaurants, is a 10-minute drive away (or a half-hour stroll). While the children meet new friends in the play area, pick teams for a game of foot-, volley- or basketball, or (in the summer) take part in the entertainment programme, grownups can chill with a glass of wine on the terrace of the on-site Brasserie de Boerderij. Or you can all hit the Openluchtbad Heuveltjesbosbad (five minutes’ drive), an outdoor complex with three heated pools, water slides and lots of room for sunbathing, either poolside or on a tree-shaded lawn. The surrounding area has plenty of wooded areas and pleasant villages to explore – on foot or by bike. If you don’t have your own wheels, you can hire a bicycle on site, and you can also get route suggestions, maps and GPS equipment at reception. There are colour-coded mountain-biking trails at De Zwarte Dennen recreation area (15 minutes’ drive or half an hour by bike), plus a swimming lake in which to cool off after tackling various berms and gaps. If you’re travelling with your canine buddy, there is also a dog park here. Back at the site, after chucking your sweaty cycling gear in the washing machine of the on-site launderette, you can shower and prepare to light up the barbecue for your evening meal.

Liked: Goede wifi, mooi toilet gebouw, vriendelijk personeel, hele jaar open.

Disliked: Onduidelijk over betaling. Maar prima opgelost.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Having our own private sanitary facilities. This was a game changer. These were clean and modern and could be locked. The area is outstanding with lots of trails straight from the site. The pitches are huge with plenty of space between. The site is very child friendly with lots of play areas. We hired bikes from the campsite for the day which was amazing value.

Disliked: Upon arrival and checking into reception it was difficult to access a suitable parking space with our caravan. A designated bay with enough space would have made this less stressful. We received park rules in English but we also received a welcome pack however everything inside was in Dutch which would have taken us hours to translate. A few more leaflets about the area in English would be fab if you are trying to attract more guests from outside the Netherlands.

Liked: It is a very nice place. We were especially impressed that they had written a welcome in Danish. Lot of space and a lovely playground for the young ones. The service and the food at the restaurant was super.

Local attractions

You can engage in a friendly exchange with macaws and hear the distinctive verse of a kookaburra at Bird Park De Lorkeershoeve (25 minutes’ drive), where you can walk right into the aviaries and get up close and personal to all sorts of exotic winged creatures. There is also a miniature golf. The Hanseatic city of Zwolle (half an hour) draws visitors with its cobbled streets and medieval Grote Markt square, lined with terrace cafés. You can admire the art collection at the Museum de Fundatie, take a boat tour of the city’s star-shaped canal or have a go at wakeboarding at Lakeside Cablepark Zwolle. A vast area of wet heathland dotted with orchids and juniper shrubs, Dwingelderveld National Park (40 minutes) can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. This is also the place to spot native wildlife, from woodpeckers and sparrowhawks to deer.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

If the reception is closed on arrival, please check in at the Brasserie "de boerderij".
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Bookings are nominative and non-transferable.
