Looking for peaceful surroundings and lots for the kids to do? How about booking in at Museumboerderij Mariahoeve, a laidback site set on the outskirts of Putten amid the scenic landscapes of Gelderland’s Veluwe region? Each with an electrical hook-up available, the camping pitches are spacious and level, with some partially shaded by mature trees. Handy amenities for families include a playground with a trampoline and buggy rides right in front of the restaurant terrace (so you can keep an eye on the kids while enjoying a beer), a meadow where youngsters can pet and care for goats, sheep and rabbits, and a pond where you might get lucky and spot toads hopping around. You can also all learn about traditional farming life in the Veluwe at the carefully preserved on-site Mariahoeve Museum, built in 1907 and kitted out in period furniture; it has a lovely formal garden outside. Your catering worries are all taken care of, as the restaurant serves lunchtime snacks and kid-pleasing fast-food favourites. The place is wonderfully dog friendly too, and there are plenty of invigorating heath and woodland walks to keep you and your canine chums well exercised around the Veluwe.

Local attractions

In need of some jolly good exercise? Randmeren (20 minutes’ drive) is just the spot for trying out dinghy sailing and paddleboarding. If the kids need a bit more action, they’ll hopefully be happy with the rollercoasters in Walibi Holland (25 minutes). When exercising together is the order of the day, take the family for long hikes in Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe (40 minutes), where you can sometimes spot red deer, wild boar and rare mouflon sheep grazing on the heathland. Arty types can visit the fantastic collection of Van Goghs at the park’s Kröller-Müller Museum (also 40 minutes), while others might prefer a cycle ride (you can borrow white bikes to explore the park) around the forests and ever-shifting dunes. And actually, if you felt like having a city-sightseeing day, then Amsterdam in only 45 minutes’ away by car, leaving you enough time to absorb the horrors of the Anne Frank House, see great art at the Rijksmuseum and perhaps take the kids on a cruise around the canals lined with gabled mansions.
