Time to unwind? How about a spacious site in a nature reserve, where you can get straight out onto walking and bike trails and explore to your heart’s content before coming home to cool off with a swim? If all that sounds promising, then take a look at Recreatiepark de Paalberg, a Gelderland site surrounded by the forests of the Veluwe. From here you can stroll straight out into nearly a thousand acres of the Ermelosche Heide forest, following hiking trails of various lengths or finding bike trails to take you out through the forest and across the heaths. In fact there are many ways to get a good dose of fresh air around here – both the adventure trails of Klimbos Ermelo and the gentle grazing space of Ermelo sheepfold are within easy walking distance, and the banks of the Veluwerandmeren are about half an hour away by bike for beach time and water-based activities. When you’re not out and about, there are active options on site too, including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools (with a kids’ pool and waterslide for extra fun), a tennis court, a playground and a summer programme of kids’ activities. There’s also a sauna where you can soothe aching muscles after a long walk or bike ride. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted here, and there’s a handy food shop on site where you can pick up many of the bits you’ll need (and a bigger supermarket is 10 minutes’ cycle away in Ermelo). The site also has a snack bar and a restaurant/bar for the times when you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

Liked: Great (large) site, friendly & accommodating reception staff, stayed in the 1st week of April which was our (UK) school holidays but not in Netherlands. This meant we pretty much had the pool & slide to ourselves both days. The site was therefore very quiet which suited us. Bike hire available which we used. Spacious level pitches. Pizzas in the restaurant & staff there were also good. LOTS of playgrounds dotted around the site! Campervan / motorhome pitches close to the shower block (clean & individual portaloo type pods). Great really overall.

Disliked: All printed info is in Dutch & Need to “translate” all info from the site “app” as no option to select English. Not the end of the world though. It is their country after all.

Washing machines a bit pricey at €5.50 per wash and €5.50 per dry. Also ensure you follow the instructions and load / select the program first before tapping your card or you’ll receive an extra payment as we did.

“Camperclean” (€2.50) system is a good idea for the black waste tank however it didn’t clean it 100% for us. could be down to user error though.

Liked: The sites space and privacy. Backs straight into amazing woods all around, perfect for bringing our 2 dogs for daily roaming.
Bonus if use of all facilities including pool and sauna.

Liked: seemed to be plenty to do

Disliked: when we asked about the amenities ie crazy golf we were told on arrival activities are included in site fees when we asked to play we were charged to play for a course that looked like it hadn't been cleared for weeks and was covered with rotting leaves which we had to clear to play

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a great way to get a good dose of fresh air – but if you (or the kids) fancy a different activity, you can wander over to Klimbos Ermelo (five minutes' walk) for adventures on the treetop trails and ziplines. There are also outdoor and indoor playgrounds, laser games and a trampoline park at Boerderij-Pret (10 minutes’ drive). If you like your days out to have a bit of a historical/cultural vibe, nearby attractions like Museum Het Pakhuis (five minutes), Museumboerderij Mariahoeve (10 minutes) and Kasteel Staverden (10 minutes) may well fit the bill. You could also spend the day in Harderwijk (15 minutes), visiting the Foundation City Museum and Marius van Dokkum Museum, or take in the Dutch Baroque architecture and formal gardens of Palace Het Loo (25 minutes). Kids not into such things? Set your sights on a day at Walibi Holland or animal encounters at Apenheul instead (both 25 minutes).

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Please pick any available pitch on arrival.
The site will send you further check-in information 3 day(s) before your arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 90 day(s) of arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Entertainment passes are included in the rate.

General

Entertainment and activities are available between 07/07 and 26/08.
In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
