Cities, heath, woodlands, sand drifts… in Veluwe, the list of landscapes goes on. Handily enough, Europarcs de Hooge Veluwe is well placed to take it all in, being based opposite the southern edge of Hoge Veluwe National Park, 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Arnhem and half an hour from Apeldoorn. Ready for takeoff? The Schaarsbergen entrance to the national park is just across the road from the stylish, family-friendly holiday park. So, rent yourself a classic white bicycle and get pedalling over the heaths and shifting sands; there are over 40 kilometres of cycling trails easily accessed from here. In the north of the national park, the Kröller-Müller Museum (15 minutes’ drive) has the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world and there’s the 20th-century hunting lodge Country Residence Museum Jachthuis Sint Hubertus (25 minutes), which was once lived in by the famed Kröller-Müller family. Down south, your days might include tucking into stews or stroopwafel on a terrace on the Rijnkade (15 minutes), which looks over the river Rhine. Just don’t get too carried away with life in Arnhem, as there are pool days to be had on site. Europarcs de Hooge Veluwe has an indoor and outdoor pool, restaurant, pool table and an outdoor play area. A change of scenery from the moors and Veluwe forests, Kootwijkerzand (25 minutes) is the so-called ‘Sahara of the low countries’ and has huge drifting sand dunes with a steel watchtower. Further north, Apeldoorn has the free-roaming monkey park Apenheul (25 minutes), a theme park named Julianatoren Apeldoorn (half an hour) and the royal Paleis Het Loo (half an hour).

Liked: Brilliant location, stayed in a "tiny house" which was beautiful, clean, and comfy.

Disliked: Only stayed for one night and it cost £180.

Tiny House 2 bedroom cottage / chalet / bungalow (four person)

Liked: The park was so green, clean and brilliant, the staff was super friendly, the restaurant on site was excellent and the indoor pool gets 10 out of 10. We loved the tiny house, the green sorounding was beautiful and relaxing.
Also super close to the best zoo ever seen and other fun activities.

Disliked: 3 things I would change if I would plan this house: bathroom sink bigger, it was less than a toothbrush deep, getting washed was a serious challenge. The bathroom mirror on the other door, so one can look I to with doing a funny bend round the sink, and the cabin with double bed I would have loved on the ground floor with a higher bed frame. The ladder was unnecessary and getting out of the bed on the floor is hard if you are a bit stiff.
The ladder down from the loft is probably normal for Dutch people, I was just grateful no one fell and broke the neck.
Afterwards I read about the woolves in the area, not keen on that.

Liked: De ligging. Vlak bij Burgers Zoo en de Veluwe om te fietsen. Ook op het park hadden we een tiny house helemaal aan het einde - het voelde afgelegen tussen het groen.
Huisje heeft alles wat je nodig hebt. Ook met de pelletkachel werkte snel - we hadden een heel koud weekend te pakken (10 graden) en toch was het gauw knus.

Prima park, ga er zeker nog een keer gebruik van maken

Liked: De rust en de opzet van het park. De service van de medewerkers op het park.

Disliked: Er werd heel goed afval gescheiden. Helaas in prachtige huisje 1 afvalemmer. Jammer dat je het al niet in het huisje kunt scheiden. Scheelt je veel rommel naast je afvalbak.

Local attractions

Oh to be in Arnhem (10 minutes’ drive), sauntering around vintage shops and strolling around the 250-year-old estate Park Sonsbeek. There are museums in the city for those who’d like to acquaint themselves with the city’s past… or its winemaking. Arnhems Oorlogsmuseum (10 minutes’ walk) will reveal the city’s role in the world wars and Netherlands Open Air Museum (10 minutes) is a recreation of farms and factories from the country’s past. Based in a wine cellar, Stg. Ned. Wijnmuseum Arnhem (15 minutes) is more light-hearted and talks guests through the process of getting wine from grape to glass, as well as the tricks and techniques used in the Netherlands. Visiting a castle gives a good insight into the old times – and none more so than Castle Doorwerth (20 minutes), one of the country’s oldest castles. Kasteel en park Rosendael (15 minutes) is another historical property; it’s more of a house than a castle and has an orangery, barefoot path and grand grounds. A zoo day too? In Burgers' Zoo (five minutes), the animals live in tropical rainforests, desert settings and underwater tanks.
