  • Peaceful site 100 metres from the Alta Badia cross-country skiing area
  • Shuttle bus to Armentarola ski lift a kilometre and a half away
  • Wellness centre, sauna and restaurant serving South Tyrolean dishes
Just picture this scene. (Or indeed, peruse the site pics.) Pitch yourself up at Camping Sass Dlacia and you'll be way up at the highest campsite in Italy's spectacular Dolomite mountains – surrounded by pine forests, high peaks and stunning views all around. And then? After a hefty day of hiking, skiing, cycling, mountain biking or climbing (the site is slap bang in the famed Alta Badia ski resort so niftily placed for the whole heap) you can retreat back to base to be thoroughly pampered in the wellness centre, where three different saunas await. And after that? Potter over to the restaurant-pizzeria right on site for disc-shaped dinners and South Tyrolean dishes, or work your way through the menus of the several Alpine restaurants and huts in the area – before settling down in the well-lit TV room to read or watch the telly. You can (gently) plot your next day's mountainous shenanigans too, at the Camping Sass Dlacia ski room: sì, there is such a thing. All this lushness is in north-eastern Italy's Val Badia, at 1,690 metres altitude and under 10 minutes' drive from the South Tyrol village of San Cassiano. The Armentarola ski lift is a kilometre and a half away, reachable with no effort at all via the Camping Sass Dlacia ski bus along the famed 'hidden track' descending from the Lagazuoi mountain. And finally? The site is biker friendly too: picture the scene of you and your wheels whizzing around this stunning mountain setting, stopping off occasionally to snap shots with which to fully boast when back home.

Electric optional gravel pitch

Liked: One of the best sites we've stayed at. Set amongst the pine trees with the mountain peaks rising above the site to its rear, it really is spectacular. There is a new toilet and shower facility which is first class. The pitches seem to be well spaced, however, it was relatively quiet when we stayed. Reception staff are friendly and speak fluent English. Electric is optional. The restaurant and pizzeria located in the main building is definitely worth a meal. Waste water dump for the motorhone is located at the entrance and requires a key from reception. Freshwater is doted around the site on what looks like fire hydrants. There are some breathtaking walks in the area around the site

Liked: Very nice campsite, amazing location! Clean and tidy. Great facilities, maybe a little dated but clean. Excellent staff, lovely food in the restaurant. Well stocked shop. Wellness spa looked really nice but did not get a chance.

Electric optional gravel pitch

Liked: Nice location, overall clean place. Nice staff, nice spa center, nice restaurant, many things to do around. Overall great with one notable exception (see below).

Disliked: Our 9 year old was not admitted to the spa die to "no kids policy - risk" despite our assurances that there would be no problem whatsoever for anyone and despite the fact that his 13 year old brother was allowed. This is not OK, not all kids are the same and a parent is the only authority on such matters. One person from the staff was sympathetic and totally understood the problem, but it was out of her hands.

Another issue is that the toilet facilities, although modern and new are situated just at one place in the middle of the huge lot and if the camping is full will not be sufficient by any means.

Liked: Showers, pizzeria/restaurant, wellness centre, shop and location

Disliked: Organisation of pitches - it's like a shanty town of tents and motorhomes. Ground is too tough for tent pegs.
Laundry service is €6 per wash or dry so €12 per load.
No recycling of plastics. Just bottles which seems strange

Local attractions

The site's spectacular Alta Badia and Dolomite mountain setting at the entrance of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park is a tiptop starting point for hiking, road bike tours and mountain biking, as well as gentler sightseeing and photo snapping strolls among peaks and mountain streams. The centre of the Alta Badia ski resort is a mere 100 metres away for snowy sports in winter, and ski slopes are within a kilometre. The site bus connects to Alta Badia as well as the 1,200 kilometres of slopes of the Dolomiti Superski area, made up of 12 valleys available to ski with one pass. A ski school and kit hire is at Dolomiti Superski too if you're new to the art; closer to home, an alpine sports centre with ski school and snowshoeing treks is right in front of the site.
