What a beaut… Camping Lacona Pineta is in the midst of a nine-acre maritime pine grove (splendid enough), in the Archipelago Toscano National Park near the Capo di Stella promontory on the isle of Elba (even splendider), and a paltry 50-metre stroll to the clear waters and white sands of Tuscany's Lacona Gulf and Lacona beach (possibly the most splendid factoid of all).
This is a family-friendly site, popular with young kids for its junior entertainment programme organised in high season as well as for its roomy playground and its paddling pool, next to the main outdoor pool and surrounded by a sun terrace for hours of lazing in the warmth (although it's quite possible that the kids may not be up for quiet basking…)
The site's been open since 1957 but is fully modern and is fully equipped to welcome guests with disabilities. Among its amenities are facilities blocks with free hot showers, a laundry room and a washing-up area; for food, there's a bar-restaurant and a mini market selling fresh bread and essential groceries.

Local attractions
To the beach and to the Elba coastline: Camping Lacona Pineta is in a handy setting between Capo Stella and Capo Fonza, minutes from Lacona's gorgeous 1.2km sandy beach backed by dunes strewn with wildflowers including yellow tulips and Carolina spiderlilies. Sailing, diving, waterskiing and other watersports are all available in the area.
Several other Elba beaches come highly recommended by the Lacona Pineta team, such as Cavoli, about four and a half kilometres from Elba's longest beach Marina di Campo and a top spot for revellers because of its regular beach parties; the sandy beach and Punta di Fetovaia views of family-friendly Fetovaia, and quieter Laconella, popular with snorkellers and kayakers.
More sands? Take the camera to the snapshotting opps around the white pebbles and clear waters of Sansone beach between Portoferraio and Enfola, or to the small beaches of Sant'Andrea and Cotoncello. Chiessi, on the west side of Elba, is surrounded by rocks and cliffs and is a top island pick for windsurfers.
For days in town, a 10-minute drive will have you at Elba's main urban centres: Capoliveri, Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio and Marina di Campo.
