If beach times feature highly on your holiday hitlist, it surely makes sense to settle as close to the shoreline as possible. Family-friendly Tuscany site Camping Giannella, half an hour’s drive from Orbetello, delivers on that front – it's a mere minute’s amble from a lengthy stretch of sand.
This handy location on the little strip of land running across the sea from Albinia to Monte Argentario, delivers on several more aspects too: there’s a couple of restaurants within walking distance, a bus stop just outside for jaunts to nearby towns, and proximity to local activities including horse riding, scuba diving, boat trips and days spent wallowing in thermal waters.
Swims and sunbathing may well account for much of your time around the site, but if the bambini demand a bit more variety there’s also a playground and football pitch, and kids’ activities and evening entertainment through the summer months. At the opposite end of the activity spectrum, you'll also be sorted for siesta spots in the shade of the site’s many trees.
Fuelling up for whatever antics you've got planned is pretty straightforward here: take a table at the restaurant for pizzas, fish dishes and other local faves, head to the bar for coffee and tipples or swing by the mini market before stoking up the coals at the barbecue area.

Disliked: Tired campsite which needs a real upgrade.

Local attractions
If you're not content with sticking to the shallows at the beach, have a chat with the team at the on-site diving centre to sort days bubbling away below the surface. Coming face-to-face with fish doesn't have to involve getting wet though: potter off to Porto Santo Stefano (10 minutes’ drive) to visit its aquarium.
Porto Santo Stefano's also the place to cast off for boat trips to gorgeous Giglio island for more fab beaches, snorkelling, a castle and panficato sweets – buy them when you see them, as they're only available on the island. More watery days out can be had watching wildlife in Orbetello Lagoon nature area (10 minutes’ drive) or soaking in the Terme di Saturnia thermal baths (55 minutes).
Tuscany’s renowned for its historic bits and bobs, and this part is no exception: top picks nearby include Padri Passionisti hilltop convent (15 minutes) and the pretty medieval town of Capalbio (half an hour). If art’s more your thing, drive over to the Tarot Garden, a colourful open-air sculpture park 25 minutes away.
