Who's up for some Sicilian seaside? Course you are – the only issue is how long you can have it before being dragged kicking and screaming back to life's little responsibilities. Have it in spades at Camping Baia del Sole: it's just 50 metres from here to a splendid sandy beach. The beach belongs to the southern Sicilian village of Marina di Ragusa, a sunny tourist town where humans have sensibly settled since the fifth century BC. Modern peeps with any sense should spend most of their holiday time on the sands and in the water here; for those times you seek adventure elsewhere, the town is 20 minutes' drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Scicli (old piles ahoy), 30 from another UNESCO site at Ragusa, and under five minutes from the Fiume Irminio nature reserve. The site covers one and a half hectares and has serviced pitches under the shade of pine, eucalyptus and acacia trees, all overlooking a paved path with night lighting. The owners have carefully placed amenities to be as convenient as possible to guests: the toilets and free hot showers are centrally set and there are several washing-up areas around the site, designed to be easily reachable from any pitch. Your leisurely and foodie options include games for the kids, a barbecue area and a large communal space for eats and natters. There is a bar at the hotel on site. There is also free wifi throughout.

Liked: Die zentrale Lage punktet. Zum wunderschönen Strand und zum Meer (nur über die Straße) weniger Meter. Der Stadtkern und ein gut sortierter Supermarkt sind zu Fuß gut zu erreichen. Schattige, großzügige Stellplätze mit Schotter. Sehr nette Mitarbeiter, immer jemand vor Ort und hilfsbereit.

Disliked: Wer auf gute Sanitäranlagen angewiesen ist, wird hier enttäuscht. Fehlende Klobrillen, kein Toilettenpapier oder Seife, offene Abflussrinnen und Schläuche am Wasserhahn, die angesetzt haben. Duschen allerdings heiß. Alles sauber, aber auf jeden Fall sanierungsbedürftig. Außerdem waren wir ständig von streunenden Katzen umzingelt, die auf der Suche nach Futter sehr penetrant wurden. Für uns und unseren Hund, etwas stressig.

Disliked: Very loud during the evening with multiple bars and what sounded like kitchens in close proximity to the campsite.

Liked: Ho apprezzato la pulizia, l'ordine e l'organizzazione. I bagni non sono ristrutturati di recente ma sono tenuti bene e questo fa passare in secondo piano il loro non essere nuovi. Inoltre il personale e' attento ad ogni esigenza e molto professionale.

Disliked: Non ho particolarmente apprezzato la mancanza di "aria". Si e' molto vicini gli unici agli altri e l'avere la position sotto alberi di alto fusto che ti consentono di godere di ombra ti impedisce però di avere ricircolo d'aria. Ovviamente e' da tenere in considerazione che la temperatura ha sfiorato i 40° ed il tasso di umidità e' stato altissimo per cui immagino che in un periodo meno afoso avremmo apprezzato meglio la permanenza. Ma in questo il camping ci può fare decisamente poco. Ci ritornerei.

Liked: Het strand was dichtbij

Disliked: Onvriendelijk en onbehulpzaam personeel. De meeste spreken alleen Italiaans, behalve een jongen van +-35 jaar. Die sprak ook Engels.

De bar zit bij het hotel, maar als er niets wordt uitgelegd, moet je er zelf achterkomen. Zo ook het restaurant en de entertainment. Geen idee of wij daar naar binnen mochten. Er komt iedere morgen rond 0830 uur een auto die brood verkoopt uit de achterbak. Ook hier waren wij niet van op de hoogte. De staanplaatsen direct aan de linkerkant (wij hadden nr 2) staan heerlijk in de schaduw. Helaas vinden de duiven dit ook en wordt je camper geheel onder gepoept door de duiven. Ik zal hier zeker niet voor meer dan een overnachting komen. Het viel me zwaar tegen.

Disliked: costi eccessivi tra cui quelli dell'energia elettrica in quanto senza essere stato informato all'ingresso in uscita hanno voluto corrisposti € 5,50 di energia consumata in soli 2 giorni (quasi quanto 1 appartamento con grandi elettrodomestici) anche se già in ingresso avevo corrisposto € 10,00 per l'utilizzo dell'energia elettrica 6 ampere

Local attractions

Art, history, wildlife and sands... have the lot on your Sicilian seaside hol... and add in some time for sailing, diving, hiking and mountain biking too. Arty sorts and historyheads should aim for the UNESCO sites dotted around the south-eastern third of Sicily: there are eight (Scicli, Ragusa, Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica, Noto and Palazzolo Acreide), making up the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Sites. (TV fans should also note that Scicli is the setting for the TV series Inspector Montalbano.) Start off at Scicli to see its several churches and the Palazzo Fava baroque palace, then mosey on over to Ragusa for two 18th-century cathedrals, more baroque churches and the 17th-century country estate of Villa Zinna. As well as the reserve a couple of kilometres away, beach buffs and nature spotters have the Cava Randello Natural Protected Nature Reserve 25 minutes from the site to potter around, where the beach is famed as one of the most scenic in Italy. Close by (half an hour from Camping Baia del Sole), the Pino d'Aleppo reserve is home to foxes, rabbits, weasels, birds of prey, herons and turtles among many more.

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
