A lovely spot under the trees

  • Peaceful site on the slopes of Mount Etna, with stunning views
  • A 10-minute drive to the Etna cable car and adventure park
  • Friendly site with regular communal meals; dogs welcome
If you had to choose the ultimate view for an outdoor stay in Sicily, it would probably be either Mount Etna or the sea. So imagine, if you will, the delight that awaits at Camping La Grotta, which manages to have views of both… Granted, it’s the Etna view that's by far the closest here – and that’s because this site is within the Etna National Park, about 10 minutes’ drive from the trailhead and cable car to the summit of Europe’s largest volcano. However, up here at 1400 metres above sea level you can expect fabulous views stretching out over forests and craters as far as the sea – yes, it’s a scenic spot indeed. Being within the national park also means you’ll be well placed for days of exploration – hiking trails, viewpoints, caves, craters and adventure activities are all close by. And then, when you’ve exhausted your energy for the day, you can simply come back, fall into a hammock and soak up more of the atmosphere and scenery of this special area (the views are even pretty good after dark, as you’ll often get a great display of stars out here away from urban areas). With an emphasis on peace and relaxation, this is a fairly simple site with minimal facilities stretching to toilets, cold showers and charging facilities for your gadgets (you’ll be taking a lot of pics, no doubt…) Spacious pitches have plenty of shade from the trees, and there’s a laidback, sociable atmosphere that peaks at the regular communal dinners where guests come together to eat local dishes while admiring the sunset (book in for this by 4pm on the day).

Non-electric pitch

Liked: I liked the views, the remoteness, no hot water, no electricity, close to etna, location, high altitude, hospitality and the fact we could park the motorcycle right next to the tent. Also a good price for the location.

Disliked: Water flow poor to shower block, the site could be better organised to free up more pitches.

Local attractions

Exploring Etna will be your main mission, of course – if you’re not planning to hike up to the summit (and it is quite a long way up…) you can ride up in the cable car (10 minutes' drive). Nearby, you can also visit the smaller craters (10 minutes) and see beneath the surface at Grotta dei Tre Livelli (15 minutes). There are also plenty of hiking trails around, taking in viewpoints and unusual spots like a house buried in lava. Bring mountain bikes too, if you like, as there are several trails around to test your tyres on. For more outdoor thrills, try the adventure trails, ziplines and quad bike tours from Parco Avventura EtnAvventura Serra La Nave (10 minutes). For a taste of local life and to see some wildlife, stop in at Parsifal Park (10 minutes) on your way down to the village of Nicolosi (15 minutes). And did you also know there are vineyards on the volcano? Learn more at Monti Rossi Etna Wines (15 minutes).
