  • Cosy Piedmont mountain refuge at 1726 metres' altitude
  • Well located for a variety of hiking and mountain bike trails
  • Bar on site for drinks, snacks and meals; access only on foot or bike
Planning an adventure in the mountains? You’ll be all set when you stay at Rifugio Fontana Mura, an Alpine refuge at the foot of the Colle della Roussa in the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Natural Park. The adventure starts before you even get to the site – it’s accessible only on foot or by mountain bike, so you’ll begin with a six-kilometre walk from the nearest parking area. It’s a fairly easygoing path, however – suitable for families and walkers of all abilities, and with some fabulous views to keep you going along the way. Those views continue when you get to the site – you’ll be at 1726 metres above sea level here and completely immersed in spectacular mountain scenery, with your only neighbours being the animals in the surrounding meadows. The on-site bar has a menu of drinks, snacks and meals (showcasing local produce) to reward your walking efforts, with shaded outdoor tables where you can continue to soak up the scenery. Of course, arriving here is just the start of it – this site is in prime position for getting out to explore the Alpe Sellery Superiore area, with access to GTA hiking trails and other routes of varying lengths and difficulties for hiking and mountain biking. As you’d expect from a mountain refuge, the facilities here are fairly simple but they’re well maintained. You’ll have access to toilets and showers, and there's also a wifi connection to help you plan your outings and keep in touch.

Local attractions

You don't need to be an expert mountaineer to enjoy your time here, as there are trails nearby for all levels of hiking/biking ability, including family-friendly routes and others for more experienced hikers. The best approach is to ask on site for recommendations that suit your ability and requirements. Some of the popular routes around here include the Colle della Roussa (taking you on climbs up above 2000 metres) and paths to the spectacular lakes of Rouen, Sottano and Soprano. Whichever trail you choose, you’ll be immersed in a landscape that’s all soaring peaks, pastures, woodland areas and wildlife (look out for chamois, marmots and eagles among other things). This area also played a role in World War II, so keep your eyes open for remnants of war history as well.
