Nature, gastronomy and wellness are all wrapped up in one gorgeous package at Società Agricola Cacigolara, in the Emilia Romagna Apennines, about 20 minutes’ drive from Borgo Val di Taro.
This wonderfully peaceful site is part of a farm on the edge of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Oasi WWF dei Ghirardi, a protected area of woodland and meadows with hiking trails and lots of wildlife to look out for. These woods are renowned for their porcini mushrooms, which you can sample at the on-site restaurant. You’ll need to book your spot if you want to eat, because the food – which is made with organic, seasonal and home-grown or local ingredients – is all prepared to order. Home-made products such as jams and fruit liqueurs (plus herb-based beauty lotions) are also available to buy.
So that’s the nature and gastronomy sorted. What about that wellness break? You might like to start with a yoga lesson, held in a geodesic dome with views of the forested mountains. For something more hands-on, sign up for a shiatsu or Ayurvedic massage (couples’ massages are also available).
Of course, you may also just want to chill – in a shaded hammock, in the outdoor pool or by taking a leisurely stroll through the hills (with your dog if you like– as long as you keep them on a leash so they don’t spook the resident cows, goats, rabbits and horses).
Accommodation is in large colourful yurts (on wooden decks for additional insulation) with real beds (bed linen and towels are supplied), electricity and heat pumps. Each yurt has its own dedicated toilet and hot-water shower.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.- The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
- The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 10/09 (subject to weather conditions).
- Guests under the age of 5 are not allowed on site.
- No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
- Tents are not accepted at this park.
- If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Local attractions
There have been people living in these scenic surroundings for many hundreds of years – and they’ve left behind some lovely buildings to visit. The closest of these is the elegant Castello di Compiano (15 minutes’ drive), where you can tour the house-museum, the food and wine museum and the masonic museum. The hilltop Castle of Bardi (40 minutes) is another great place to visit, with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside.
There is, of course, also a whole heap of history to explore in Parma (an hour and 15 minutes) – it’s home to a Romanesque cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo della Pilotta museums as well as some great places to eat or buy its signature ham and cheese.
Back out in the countryside, you may like to stop by to see the art installations of Liveglia Live open-air museum (45 minutes), find your way through the topiary maze and art-filled gardens of Labirinto della Masone (an hour and five minutes) or follow around 15 kilometres of nature trail in your neighbouring Ghirardi nature reserve.
