Delicious food and fabulous views come together in one lovely Emilia Romagna location at Il Granello, a friendly agriturismo in the Contrafforte Pliocenico Regional Reserve. This peaceful site is set in a wooded valley that gives it a sheltered and secluded atmosphere ripe for a relaxing rural break. With woods and fields all around, this is a popular spot for wildlife – expect to see (or at least hear) buzzards, cicadas, deer and lots of little animals while you're on site or walking on nearby paths. The woods around the fields have a network of short nature trails, including a climb to Monte Rosso (a path that passes a cave) and the poetically named ‘path of friends’, which takes you to the rocky southern slopes for some lovely views to the south. Beyond that there are options for horse riding, caving and wild swimming (in the Savena river) – and you can tie all of this in with art/history/food-filled days out in Bologna or Florence. In fact, you don’t need to go that far for either history or food. Il Granello is on what was once the Winter Line, and you can still see remnants of the World War II structures around the site's embankments. And as for food, you just need to take a table at the restaurant to try produce from the estate and its neighbours in the Contadini Bio association – cheeses, cured meats, local veg, wines and beers are all on offer.

Route directions

The site does not recommend that you follow Satnav directions. Getting to the site is simple when you take the Strada Statale 65 della Futa (SS65). Once you reach Livergnano, take the road Via di Bortignano and continue for 1.8 kilometres. You will be able to see cultivated fields. Any other route is not accessible by car.

Local attractions

If you're even slightly interested in food, you'll want to spend a fair amount of time in Bologna (40 minutes' drive) – the city has a thriving reputation as a foodie hotspot, with lots of food tours to join, markets to browse and shops and restaurants filled with local produce. In between eats, check out the Gothic Basilica di San Petronio, the Torre degli Asinelli and archaeology museum for a taste of the city's history. For more on the area's past, start at the Winter Line Museum (five minutes), full of World War II memorabilia, then move on to the excellent National Etruscan Museum (40 minutes) and Parco Storico di Monte Sole (55 minutes). If you have time, you should certainly throw in a day trip to Florence (an hour and a half) as well. There are also plenty of options around for those who would like to focus on outdoor activities: perhaps riding at Red Rose Ranch (10 minutes), caving at Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi (25 minutes) or walks at Lago di Bilancino and Rocchetta Mattei (both an hour). You can also learn all about the night skies at Stazione astronomica e Parco delle Stelle di Loiano (20 minutes).

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Unsupervised minors must have a letter of authorisation from their parents or legal guardian.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
There is no reception at this site. Please check in at the Sala ristorante instead.
The site will send you further check-in information 1 day(s) before your arrival.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 5 day(s) of arrival.
