Imagine waking up in the morning and the very first thing you see is a gorgeous view out over the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea… No, it’s not a dream, it’s the fabulous reality of a stay at Camping Columbia.
This Calabria site is in a very enviable position indeed, amid a pine forest right on the shoreline in Montegiordano Marina. Pitches look out over the sea and there’s a free sandy beach just next door for days of sunbathing or splashing in the sea with the kids.
There’s been a campsite running here for more than 30 years, with the current owners taking over in 2022 from their much-loved predecessor Franco Tarsia. They inherited a site that’s been well tended over the years and set up with all the essentials needed for an excellent seaside holiday – that includes fun things like a covered games/relaxation area and hammocks to snooze in as well as practicalities like showers, toilets and a campervan service area.
This location also means that you have easy access to several bars, cafés, restaurants and food shops within easy walking distance. That said, the owners are aware you may end up too chilled-out to fancy much of a walk, so there’s also a café/bar on site where you can pick up meals or relax with a coffee.

Liked: Seaside location, pine trees, friendly and hospitable camp owner, shady and level pitches.
Disliked: Showers and washing facilities definitely require improvements, including the need for doors and working locks! Could also be cleaner. Overpriced, considering these issues.

Local attractions
You may well end up spending much of your time simply strolling from pitch to beach, but if you do fancy stretching your legs a little bit you could always stroll up to Castello di Montegiordano (25 minutes’ walk away) to see the restoration work in action.
And if you want to stretch your legs a lot, there are plenty of waymarked trails in Pollino National Park (40 minutes’ drive) taking you up hills and past lakes. Oasi WWF Policoro Herakleia (20 minutes) is another good spot for a wander around a protected nature reserve with lots of wildlife to spot along the way.
Or maybe you’d just like to stick to time spent on beaches? If so, there are plenty to put on the list, including Roseto Capo Spulico (10 minutes) and Trebisacce (25 minutes). For a little bit of brain food in between beach trips, perhaps try the Museo Etnografico in Roseto Capo Spulico (10 minutes) or a walking tour of Policoro with Archeoart (20 minutes).
